A compact, easy-operating, inexpensive alternative to the more powerful machines favored by espresso aficionados, this 800-watt espresso maker brews 2 or 4 cups of espresso (about 1-1/2 ounces each) and also froths milk for café lattés and cappuccinos. A lever selects the brew strength to suit personal tastes. A milk frother is permanently attached to the steam tube for convenience. (The steam tube also can be used to heat other liquids such as hot chocolate or instant soup.) Once water is poured into the tank, ground coffee (scoop included) is tamped into the filter inside the filter holder, the filter holder is locked into place, and the machine turned on, espresso begins to flow into the machine’s glass carafe in about two minutes. For cappuccinos and other milk-based drinks, the brewing process can be temporarily interrupted in order to froth milk.
Other features include an LED “on” light, a removable plastic drip tray, soft-touch handles on carafe and filter holder, push-in cord storage, and a safety cap on the water tank (won’t open if steam is in tank). The machine measures 12-1/2 inches high, 7 inches wide, and 9 inches deep. It carries a one-year warranty against defects. –Fred Brack
