People who are serious about their coffee know that it’s no secret that freshly ground coffee beans make the best cup of coffee. If you are serious about the coffee you drink, then you really need to think about getting yourself a coffee grinder. But should you get a Burr Coffee Grinder or a Blade Coffee Grinder.

Here are 5 differences between these two types of coffee grinders to help you decide:

The main difference is the way in which they grind the beans. A burr coffee grinder has 2 cones with grooves in them that grip and grind the coffee beans to a desired fine-ness of grind. A blade coffee grinder has a spinning blade (much like a kitchen blender) that spins and chops the beans.

A burr coffee grinder can be set to grind the beans to exactly the level of fine-ness that you require.

It is hard to control how fine your coffee beans will be ground with a blade coffee grinder as it depends on how long you operate the grinder. Grinding the beans for too long in a blade coffee grinder can lead to overheating the beans and getting a burnt taste.

Burr grinders make more mess and are harder to clean than blade grinders which generally just need a quick wipe with a clean damp cloth.

A burr coffee grinder will be more expensive than a blade coffee grinder.

On the whole, it is the burr coffee grinder that come out on top for the quality and consistency of its grinding process. Overall, if you are a true coffee afficianodo who enjoys the whole ritual of making a coffee from beans to cup, then you would be better off getting a burr coffee grinder.

However if you are looking to minimize your costs and are not too concerned about the quality of the grind of your coffee beans, then you would probably be happy with a blade coffee grinder which would also be easier to maintain.

One of the most popular burr coffee grinders on the market is the Cuisinart DBM-8 Supreme Grind Automatic Burr Mill (CCM-16PC1). It costs about $40 and has some great reviews. it is outfitted with a heavy-duty motor and has 18 grind settings ranging from fine to extra-coarse – all controlled by a clearly marked and pleasantly clicking dial.

A good blade coffee grinder to have a look at is the KitchenAid Blade Coffee Grinder. It features a heavy-duty motor housing helps keep the grinder stable during operation.

The clear top cover is durable and the whole grinder is remarkably easy to clean with the bowl, blade, and top cover being able to go straight to the dishwasher for easy cleanup. The exterior wipes clean with a soft cloth.

There is certainly nothing more refreshing than a good cup of coffee. This is probably the reason why coffee lovers really have preferences on their type of coffee. One of the most sought after coffee worldwide is the Columbian Coffee which is popular for its distinct taste and rich flavor.

Columbian coffee is a collective term given to all coffee products of Columbia. These coffee products are exported to major countries in the world such as the United States, Japan, Switzerland, The Netherlands, and Germany. The main variety of Columbian Coffee is the Columbian Mild which is characterized by the soft soil from which it is grown from. Other varieties of Columbian Coffee include the Coffee Arabica of Typica, Coffee Arabica of Caturra, and Coffee Arabica of Bourbon cultivars.

Columbian Coffee is traditionally roasted with charcoal since the 14th century to the late 19th century. The slow yet steady heat provided by the charcoal produces a bright acidity in the coffee. However, when the gas-ignited oven was developed, the roasting was now done in the oven with temperature settings of 400 °F to 425 °F for a maximum of twenty minutes. This conventional process of preparing coffee produces the aromatic oils for the distinctive flavor of the coffee.

Different classifications of coffee are achieved according to the type of roasting process that it undergoes like low or high. Generally for Columbian Coffee, it is classified as Cinnamon Roast, American Roast, City Roast, Full City Roast, Vienna Roast, French Roast, Italian Roast, and Espresso Roast.

Each of these Columbian Coffee roasts has unique flavors that garnered the favor of various coffee lovers all over the world. The Espresso Roast though is the most popular among the Columbian Coffee classes because it is commonly used in espresso machines and it produces a smoked sweet flavor.

In fact, the Jamaican Blue Mountain Coffee is referred to as the cream of the crop by many.

The Blue Mountains of Jamaica are located approximately 7500 feet high and are considered as one of the highest mountains in the Caribbean. Its location provides for a cool and misty climate with high rainfall that produces full-bodied coffee with rich tasting flavors.

Like the other varieties of coffee, the Jamaican Blue Mountain Coffee is classified according to different grades that allocate for its size, appearance, and defects allowed. The first grade of the Jamaican Blue Mountain Coffee is the Blue Mountain No. 1 with a screen size of 17/20. The second grade is the Blue Mountain No. 2 with a screen size of 16/17.

On the other hand, the Jamaican Blue Mountain Coffee with a screen size of 15/16 is graded as Blue Mountain No. 3. Furthermore, the Blue Mountain Peaberry is a special grade of peaberry beans composition. Finally, the Blue Mountain Triage is the final grade of the Jamaican Blue Mountain Coffee which consists of the various sizes of the coffee beans of the other grades.

All of these grades of the Jamaican Blue Mountain Coffee have no more than 2 % of significantly defective coffee beans. Therefore, every pack of the Jamaican Blue Mountain Coffee comes with the assurance of highest quality and standard.

This unique tasting experience can only be provided by these coffees which are painstakingly grown and processed in Kenya, South Africa.

The Kenyan Coffee is grown in the highlands of Kenya and along the Mount Kenya region such that this coffee is guaranteed with the perfect growing environment and climate. The strong yet pleasant aroma of this coffee seems to awaken the sleeping spirits of coffee drinkers.
The Kenya AA Coffee is one of the world’s leading brands and is preferred by most connoisseurs all over the world. In fact, this Kenyan Coffee is even blended with poorer quality coffees for the improvement of the quality and flavor of these lesser quality.

The other grades of Kenyan Coffee are determined by the size, shape, and weight of the beans. Basically these grades range in different sizes from largest to smallest which are classified as AA, AB, PB, C, E, TT, and T. The higher the grade is, the larger the coffee beans are. This is so because the larger coffee beans are said to produce more flavor and taste.

These are simple coffee brewing device that are capable of producing a good cup of coffee in the simplest manner. Coffee is brewed using the French Press Coffee Makers by a filter less brewing method. This means that coffee and water is brewed together for a few minutes after which a plunger is depressed in order to trap the coffee ground that settles at the bottom of the beaker.

Unlike the drip coffee makers, the French Press Coffee Makers produce a stronger tasting and a thicker cup of coffee. Today, the most common types of French Press Coffee Makers are made of glass, ceramics, and stainless steel. Variations of these coffee makers include the Travel mugs and the electric French Press Coffee Makers. These coffee makers have become quite popular because of the method of preparation of the coffee. Coffee made from these coffee makers has more natural flavors and aroma in them.

One of the most popular French Press Coffee Makers is the Bodum. The French Press Coffee Makers produced by Bodum are well recognized for its innovative designs and good quality. Some of the most preferred models include Bodum Chambord which has a capacity of 3, 4, 8, and 12 cups. The Bodum Presso is also greatly preferred by consumers because it is capable of producing espresso as well.

On the other hand, the Bodum Mug Press is a portable French Press Coffee Maker, while the Bodum Columbia is one of the French Press Coffee Makers that is a thermal coffee maker.

The coffee beans that are cultivated and grown on the slopes of Mount Hualalai and Mauna Loa in Hawaii are marketed as the Kona Coffee. The Kona Coffee is among the most sought after and expensive coffees in the world. Most of the coffee experts can clearly identify Kona Coffee from other coffee varieties.

The perfect combination of humid climate along with some rainfalls in the afternoon and fertile soil create the distinctively rich taste and great aroma of Kona Coffee. It has been a tradition in Kona already for families to be operating coffee farms which were sprawled over vast lands. Typically, these coffee variety blooms in February and March and is ready for harvest by late August. By this time, these coffee beans have already ripened into a deep red cherry-like fruits.

The cherry then is run through a pulper within twenty four hours, where the beans are separated from the pulp. It is then fermented over a period of time which is dependent on the temperature and the elevation. This may be hard to imagine but, it takes about nine pounds of cherry to produce a pound of Kona Coffee.

Various grades of Kona Coffee are determined by the seed type. These grades include the Type I beans which are composed of two beans per cherry that are flat on side and oval on the other. The Type II Kona Coffee beans consist of the peaberry which is actually one round bean per cherry. Moreover, these two types of coffee beans are further classified according to the moisture content, purity of bean type, and size.

The Type I Kona Coffee grades are Kona Fancy, Kona Extra Fancy, Kona Number I, and Kona Prime; while the Type II Kona Coffee grades are Peaberry Number I and Peaberry Prime.

Stove Top Espresso Makers are actually called a lot of names. These are referred to as moka express, moka pot, macchinetta, and campfire pot. Whatever the name is, Stove Top Espresso Makers are simply non electric coffee percolators. These are coffee makers which are very portable and easy to use. In fact, these Stove Top Espresso Makers are very appropriate for camping and other outdoor activities.

The first among the Stove Top Espresso Makers is that which was produced by Bialetti and known as the Moka Express. This was practically the stove tops used in Italy in the early 1930’s.

The Moka Express is made of aluminum with Bakelite handles. The handle is basically the upper chamber of this espresso maker, while the in the center is found a column that connects the top chamber and the bottom chamber. The steam valve is located on the right side of the bottom chamber.

Pressure is actually created through heat which then forces out the water through the coffee ground and finally into the serving chamber. This may all sound very outback but amazingly, rich tasting cups of espresso were made this way in the early part of the century.

Today, there are many Stove Top Espresso Makers that have various modifications over the earlier made Stove Top Espresso Makers. One of the top manufacturers of the stove top is Bialetti. Although new designs still follow the basic features of the original Moka Express, new materials are introduced for the body of this espresso maker. Moreover, Bialetti also introduced the first among the Stove Top Coffee Makers to produce “creama”.

The Bodum Stove Top Espresso Makers are genuinely Italian in all sense. These espresso makers are capable of brewing rich cups of coffee at the perfect temperature requirement for the flavors to be totally absorbed in the coffee. Most of all, these espresso makers are inexpensive, heat resistant, and durable.

It’s becoming more and more common to see organic products on the market. You see organic bannanas, organic apples, and now, organic coffee beans. But, do most people really know what organic coffee beans are?

Organic coffee is made from coffee beans that have not been sprayed with pesticides or other growth enhancing chemicals. The coffee bushes are planted, then pretty much left alone like nature intended until it is time for harvest. This is in contrast to the normal procedure of growing coffee, which included heavy fertilizers and potent pesticides, all designed to get maximum yield from each plant at the expense of taste and quality.

Organic coffee is grown in all the worlds’ coffee producing nations. The only difference from a normal coffee plantation is that they do not use chemicals and must receive certain certifications that verify they are growing certified organic products. You could have a normal coffee plantation growing coffee right beside an organic coffee plantation. Geographical area has nothing to do with it.

The main reason why people use organic coffee is for health reasons. They don’t want their coffee to be grown using dangerous chemicals or pesticides that might eventually harm them. They feel that if coffee is left alone to grow like nature intended, it will be healthier and will not harm them.

The only real disadvantage of using organic coffee is usually the price. Since the lack of chemicals used on the actual coffee plants creates a lower yield of coffee beans, they are more expensive to produce.

Also, while organic coffee is becoming more and more popular, it is not always available for purchase everywhere. Depending on your area, you might have to go to a specialty coffee store or food store, which also might have higher prices.

Some people argue whether the taste of organic coffee is better than that of normal coffee. This is not true or false. It really depends on your personal taste, whether you prepare it right, and whether you have a sensitive pallete. Most people don’t prepare their coffee right, or ruin it with cream and sugar, so to the average person, organic coffee is not worth it.

If you have ever visited a Starbucks, you know their prices are ridiculous. It is a lot easier, and in the long run, cheaper, to learn to make your own espresso. Now, it’s not that difficult, but you will need an espresso machine.

Espresso is gaining in popularity. With the recent emergence of Starbucks and other upscale coffee houses, people are beginning to stray away from traditional coffee and into more specialized versions of the drink. But, if you have ever visited a Starbucks, you know their prices are ridiculous. It is a lot easier, and in the long run, cheaper, to learn to make your own espresso. Now, it’s not that difficult, but you will need an espresso machine.

Espresso machines work by forcing pressurized water and steam through ground espresso beans, which creates a rich, brown liquid. This liquid is espresso.

There are two main types of espresso machines on the market today: fully automatic espresso machines and stovetop espresso machines.

Automatic espresso machines are quite complicated. The basic premise is this; Water is heated using an internal heating element, then pumped under high pressure through finely ground espresso beans. This whole process happens inside the machine and is done completely automatic. There is no human intervention. Due to their high level of sophistication and engineering, they are often quite expensive, with top models running into the thousands of dollars.

A more cost effective alternative to a fully automatic espresso machine is a stovetop espresso machine.

Stovetop espresso machines come in three parts. There is a small tank on the bottom, a grill on top of that, then a container on top of that. To make espresso, you add water to the bottom, put the grill on top, fill it with ground espresso beans, and then put the container on top. Put this whole thing on top of your stove then turn it on. As the water boils it will turn to steam, and the steam will be pushed upward through the espresso beans, creating a thick, aromatic liquid, which is your espresso. The finished espresso will collect in the container on top until you are ready to pour it into individual cups.

The main thing to consider when choosing an espresso machine is the price. If you have under $100 to spend, you should get a stovetop espresso machine. If you have significantly more than that, you should get an automatic espresso machine. In reality, the espresso made by automatic espresso machines is far superior. If someone has the money to buy an automatic espresso machine, they will, and they won’t consider buying a stovetop model.

Espresso is fun to make and drink. With a basic espresso machine and a little bit of knowledge, you can make them all by yourself.

Espresso accounts for much of the coffee that is drunk in the world today. But what is espresso and why has it become such an important (and sometimes nescessary) aspect of peoples lives?

Espresso accounts for much of the coffee that is drunk in the world today. But what is espresso and why has it become such an important (and sometimes nescessary) aspect of peoples lives?

First it is important to realise that espresso is not just coffee. It is also a method of coffee making where hot water is forced under pressure through one or more servings of ground coffee.

If you sit waiting for your espresso at your favourite cafe you will also observe that espresso is a ritual. It starts with the grinding of the beans, then setting up the espresso machine (itself often looking like some wonderful contraption from another age), the hiss of the hot water being forced from the machine and the frothing of the milk. Finaly the look of concentration on the makers face as the milk is poured on top of the thick fresh coffee.

The espresso machines themselves were designed and made for cafes. In recent years the design has been adapted into smaller units for domestic use, but it is hard to get close to the original thing. Personally, I have had the best results with stove top units such as the Moka Express when at home.

The fundamental operatings of the larger cafe machines involves the passing of hot water through tightly packed coffee with much pressure applied to the water. And this is what gives the espresso its distinctive and sought after heavy-bodied, aromatic and bittersweet flavour and texture.

I have been drinking coffee since I was a child, but will never forget my first cup of proper espresso. I was working hard washing dishes in a top class resteraunt during the breakfast shift. The breakfast crowd were leaving the resteraunt to retire to the beach for the day and the chef offered me a coffee.

It arrived in a small cup on a saucer and had the most divine flavour and texture. From there on I was hooked and made it an immediate life nescessity to learn to make the perfect espresso.

The coffee grinder’s cutting burrs turn at just 450 RPM to minimize frictional heating of the grinds, and in turn, preserve the coffee flavor and aroma.

Special helical gear controls the delivery of coffee to the burrs for better grind consistency, while a bin seal plate helps position the coffee bin under the grinding spout to prevent coffee grounds from escaping.

Its 7-ounce bean hopper and coffee bin are glass to minimize any static “cling” of coffee grounds, and the unit’s compact design allows for easy storage on the countertop or in a cabinet.

For quick cleanup, the grinder’s smooth metal housing is a snap to wipe clean, and its bean hopper, hopper lid, and coffee bin are dishwasher-safe. A burr cleaning brush is included.

Its author, Corby Kummer, originally came to the subject of coffee while writing a series of articles for the Atlantic Monthly, and he found so much to say about the bean that he decided to write a book.

Kummer began with some basic questions:

What matters most in buying coffee?

How can you sort through the jumble of place names and whimsical labels on beans and blends?

Is a dark roast better, more sophisticated, than a light roast?

Is it essential to grind coffee beans at home?

What he learned in response to these queries comprises the bulk of The Joy of Coffee.

Starting with a tour of a coffee plantation and ending in the reader’s own kitchen, Kummer leads a lively and informative discussion of all phases of coffee production, from harvesting to roasting to brewing.

He discusses different roasts and the different types of coffeemakers, and he even talks about caffeine consumption and methods of decaffeination that preserve the bean’s flavor.

At the end of The Joy of Coffee is a chapter chock full of recipes for tasty treats that either go well with coffee or include it as an ingredient.

Like a great cup of Joe, The Joy of Coffee is good to the very end.

As with many other electrical household appliances there are an abundance of coffee grinders out on the market, all guaranteeing to grind out the most smooth and sumptuous tasting coffee.

As with many other electrical household appliances there are an abundance of coffee grinders out on the market, all guaranteeing to grind out the most smooth and sumptuous tasting coffee.

But you are not here to hear about all the claims of super high quality coffee grinding machines; you want solid opinions and truths regarding the best grinders out on the market and whether they provide real value for money. I have 5 highly recommended and popular grinders for you to take a look at.

But first let me give you a quick insight into what a coffee grinding machine is. Simply put a coffee grinder takes your roasted coffee beans and grinds them into a fine coarse or sandy mixture depending on your preferential taste. Instant coffee is mainly what is on offer at all super markets and convenience stores, with brands such as Kenco and Nescafe being the most popular.

So why is grinding coffee so appealing? Well buying your own supply of fresh coffee beans allows you the luxury of grinding out and making fresher coffee, as opposed to a coffee mixture that has been jarred and sat on a shop shelf for god knows how long. You therefore have more control over its texture and flavor as both are affected by how finely you grind the beans and how long the beans sit before being used. For example a coarse grind of coffee will leave your final product tasting weaker than a fine grind, so you can achieve a taste that’s perfect for you.

The best assessment for reviewing grinders is to always summarise the opinions of many rather than offering an individual opinion, with the former being the aim below. Taking the most highly reviewed grinders sold online, I have summarized many reviews to provide a convenient way in making an informed choice about which grinder to choose.

With this in mind, lets examine 3 of the most highly regarded electric coffee grinders out in the market place. We will also take a look at 2 manual coffee grinders and why some consider them to be better producing tastier coffee.

Electric Coffee Grinders

Dualit Burr Coffee Grinder 75002

With a sleek looking black and steel shell, to simply look at this grinder would give you the impression it means business, but does its performance live up its appearance?

Well with a current average rating of over 4 stars out of 5 from many reviews on Amazon, there is some justification in judging a book by its cover in this case.

The main pro’s and con’s touched upon by the reviewers are:

Pros

• Ease of use
• Fine grind
• Value for money – best coffee grinder at its price level
• Solid blade grinder
• Excellent durability

Cons

• Slightly too noisy and some static problems
• Grinds too finer coffee for some individuals, although does have 10 different settings to play with
• Coarse grind settings are questionable

Summary: Excellent high range grinder that will keep even the fussiest of coffee tasters happy.

Krups Expert, GVX231, Burr Coffee Grinder

Being almost half the price of the Dualit Burr Coffee Grinder 75002 suspicions are natural regarding performance and durability. Considering the price, these were answered to a reasonable degree.

With its authoritative and no nonsense look, the Krups GVX231 certainly looks the part. However Krupps mainly attempt to provide a grinder that is more tempting due to price whilst still maintaining a reasonable level of performance. But unlike the consistent high marked reviews received by the Dualit Burr Coffee Grinder 75002 this grinder gets a mixed reception from its users.

The main pro’s and con’s touched upon by the reviewers are:

Pros

• Good durability
• Good grind quality
• Compact size
• Coarse grind setting works well

Cons

• Beans do not always feed into grinder
• Unreliable Hopper lid and grind container

Summary: For the price your paying, you do get a reasonable quality coffee grinder, if your wanting one that is almost flawless for your home, take a step up and choose the Dualit Burr 75002.

With the appearance of a blown up inoculation gun, on face value alone I don’t know whether you would judge the KitchenAid Artisan Burr to be the mother of all coffee makers, but with its all metal construction and compact size it certainly feels the part.

Of course with price comes a rarity of reviews as most people who purchase online opt for more reasonably priced product, especially when searching for a coffee grinder. The KitchenAid Artisan Burr is double the price of the Dualit Burr which was the first grinder we covered.

Let’s take a look at the Pro’s and Con’s of this impressive grinder.

Pros

• Grinds suitably well for even expresso machines
• Removes the unpleasant predicament of stale coffee
• Stainless steel composition
• Excellent grind consistency and durability

Cons

• High price makes it less of an option for most coffee enthusiasts

Summary: The ultimate choice for the coffee fanatic and small business, the KitchenAid Artisan Burr produces an excellent coffee blend.

Manual Coffee Grinders

Recognizable, branded and established manual coffee grinders are hard to find online. One of the main reasons is that the average person today presumes the best appliances come in electronic form, I think it is fair to say that any handy appliance whether it be for the kitchen, general house work or outdoors will most likely be selling more in electronic form than manual form. Of course there are some exceptions but in general it is just the way modern society is developing.

Coffee grinders no exception to this trend, where online sites are littered with many electronic forms they only provide a modest few in manual form.

It is argued that a manual coffee grinder will produce superior tasting coffee. Without going into the science behind the claim, the main reason argued is that a manual grinder will operate more gently with lower friction and speed levels, thus producing a more gradual and finer blend of coffee.

Zassenhaus Coffee Grinder 151 BU

This cute looking coffee grinder is made from solid beech wood accompanied by stainless steel fittings. For a manual grinder the price seemed reasonable yet many reviews report back on a great coffee composition.

Let’s take a look at the Pros and Cons.

Pros

• Very sturdy construction
• Fine Grind
• Requires no electricity so more practical for activities such as camping

Cons

• Requires effort on your behalf to perform the grind
• Lack of customer support if product is faulty

Zassenhaus have a large collection of these particular manual coffee grinders so if you’re not certain about the 151 BU there are many superior models available and worth checking out.

La Cafetiere Coffee Mill

Will cost you a lot less than the Zassenhaus manual grinders but can produce a high quality coffee mixture?

The La Cafetiere Coffee Mill grinder comes in a stainless steel and black wood finish and would sit proudly on anyone’s cafeteria surface on pure aesthetics alone. With it being half the price of the Zassenhaus, questions had to be asked regarding its durability and results.

Let’s take a look at the pros and cons.

Pros

• Solid outer construction
• Grinds to a reasonably fine coffee mix
• Easy to assemble

Cons

• Low capacity
• Handle can loosen – questionable durability
• Adjustment mechanism is fiddly

If you are simply looking for an affordable and convenient grinder for making the casual cup of coffee then pick the Krups GVX231 as it is both reasonably priced and from the feedback received reliable for average use.

Are you a really big coffee fan and want to purchase an efficient and high quality grinder that will produce fantastic coffee? Then pick the Dualit Burr Coffee Grinder 75002. You may have to shell out quite a bit more compared to the Krups GVX231, but the results and performance more than make up for the price leap.

If you are a hardcore coffee fan or are considering purchasing a grinder for business use then choose the KitchenAid Artisan Burr Coffee Grinder. It produces a fine enough grind for expresso’s and is known for providing the most consistent results out of all the medium range electric coffee grinders. The price is affordable if you have the demand for serving fresh grinded coffee.

If you like to be environmentally friendly and don’t mind manually grinding your coffee then pick one of the many Zassenhaus models. It is debatable whether a manual grinder produces better tasting coffee but it provides an authentic way of making coffee and requires no electricity so it is practical to use when camping!
