Better not want to grind espresso beans! Buyer Beware!
I bought the Solis Maestro (not the plus – much difference?) and promptly filled the bean hopper about 1/4 full with Starbuck’s espresso coffee beans only to have it hang up 3 times before it finally finished them off with annoying cleaning and bean rearangement in the maintime. By hang up, I mean the grinder was grinding but no beans were moving or being ground. I had to unplug the machine and manually move the beans with my finger to get the machine running again. Apparently a design flaw allows the oily beans to stick together enough not to feed well. The machine did sound good (not noisy) and did a good job of grinding when it worked. If you don’t want espresso (which this machine is supposed to be designed for) it may be a good machine for you. I can’t imagine that Solis didn’t correct their design flaw with their new Maestro plus but I wouldn’t count on it. Better check the new Solis Maestro PLUS machine’s feedback if you have your heart set on this machine!

Maestro coffee grinder
I don’t do Espresso so can’t comment on the finer settings, but the coarse grind (I use a Bodum press pot) works great. This unit is much better than the Capresso unit it is replacing. There is much less static electricity than the Capresso unit. If I grind when I start the water boiling, none of the ground coffee sticks to the side of the collection unit. By the time the water is boiled, a gentle tap of the collection unit spills all of the ground coffee into the press pot. Highly recommended, it would probably rate 5 stars but I only give 5 stars to perfect units and nothing is perfect. Buy it, you won’t be sorry.

Good for grinding spices, but hard to clean!
I asked for a spice grinder for Christmas, and recieved this. I was a little wary of it at first, but it has worked well grinding spices and dried herbs so far (I have never used it to grind coffee). I have only used it several times, so I don’t know how durable it is. I was concerned that the plastic would absorb the odors of the spices, but I store it without the clear lid to air it out, and that seems to work. My only complaint with it is that it is a pain to clean! The lid is easily washed by hand, but the grinder cannot be immersed in water, so it’s a bit difficult. I have ended up using my fingers to wipe most of the spice residue out, and then I use a damp paper towel to get the rest. Thankfully there aren’t TOO many crevices. So if it were easier to clean, or if you could at least remove the blade to clean it, then I would give it five stars.

The only way to enjoy home brewed coffee!
It has been about six months since I started grinding my own coffee beans with this Mr. Coffee grinder. I usually use it three times a week. And my Mr. Coffee grinder is still going strong.

Of course, I read all of the instructions before attempting to use. (Like everyone one does right?) The instructions state in big bold letters to use only for grinding coffee beans. This grinder should not be used as a nut grinder or any other food items. There could be some cross contamination of flavors. “Good idea!” I said. But. What if I wanted some nut flavor with my coffee? Hint: If you did grind another food source, put in some bread pieces and grind. The food particles should be picked up with the bread. It is now back to its original state.

The grinders size is perfect for up to a 12-cup coffee maker. I always fill my 12-cup coffee pot, so I wanted to know how much whole beans to use. So once again I found this from the instructions. Six tablespoons. This is the maximum holding capacity for this grinder. Perfect.

Consistency ground size comes next. Yes after nine seconds the size should be perfect for my automatic drip coffee maker. And it was. Any longer than that the grounds would become powder, which is good for espresso and coffee in your cup. Some people like that so that would work for them.

A safety switch will automatically shut off when not in use. That is a nice feature for the safety conscience. When done grinding your beans, turn the unit over, tap a couple times, and “Walla” a pouring device. Pour right into your coffee filter. Turn on coffee machine and now you have time to clean out the grinder.

The grinder needs to be cleaned after each use to keep it in tiptop shape. And have a longer shelf life. One drawback is that some powder sticks to the bottom of the grinder. I just get a paper towel and wipe it out. Presto, cleaned until next time.

Avoid This Coffee Grinder
This is not a well made grinder. From the first time I used it, I knew this was not a Krups or a Braun. Mine lasted 4 months (the motor burned out) and I make coffee only on the weekends.

Not durable? These things are fragile!
I went through my first one in four months. The second one burnt out a motor the very first time I used it. With much better models going for just a couple of dollars more, there’s no reason to miss a single morning’s cup of coffee because of this product. To it’s credit, it worked well during its short life.

Grinds good but makes a mess
I’ve had this grinder for several years. It grinds well – consistant, very wide range of grind sizes. It does, however, make a complete mess of things. As another reviewer says, this machine creates a LOT of static. Grounds go everywhere when removed from the bin. The lid of the bin is also poorly designed. I have to hold the lid down to keep coffee coming out of the grinder from escaping under the lid and spraying my counter. Mine needs some maitenence and rather than fix it, I’ve decided to try the KitchenAid pro grinder.

Great appliance
Have owned one of these grinders for three years now, and must say that it has been entirely satisfactory. It is finely adjustable, with 15 marked settings, and half settings between. It grinds finely enough for espresso making purposes, and beyond. Beans ground at setting 1 will almost certainly choke any espresso maker out there… depending on beans and humidity, 2.5 or 3 on the dial is perfect.

I’m less a fan of the grounds hopper that collects the ground coffee… In fact I’ve retired mine and replaced it with a “bar type” doser that takes the grounds and portions them out when you pull a lever. The only other complaint I have with this grinder is the static electricity it generates… you can feel the hairs on your arm standing on end when you are reachinf for the off switch… but it does nobody any harm, so a petty complaint.

This Rocky delivers a knockout!
I have had my Rocky doserless grinder for nearly nine months and I have never regretted the purchase. This is one of the premier prosumer grade coffee grinders and delivers consistent quality for espresso through drip and (almost) up to press pot. It is solid, relatively quiet – I use mine in my office at a small university and do close my door to muffle the noise a little more – and a great option for grinding for each individual shot of espresso. Plus, its compact form factor and mechanical-cool look mean Rocky can sit on the corner of my desk, next to the Gaggia Factory lever machine that it serves.

The highlights of the Rocky are its solidity and quality, its ease of adjustment, and in the case of this doserless model, its ability to grind for each dose of espresso or brew with minimal holdover of grounds. Because the path from burrs to chute is so short and unobstructed, I can rap the side when I am done and dislodge any leftover grounds, or simply remove the two screws holding in the chute to use a brush to clear it. The metal hoop below is perfect for holding a Gaggia or Pavoni portafilter when grinding, and can be removed with one quick tug to allow you to grind into a filter, press pot, or bag. Rocky’s weight keeps it steady – it is no flimsy lightweight – and I personally like that the power switch and grind switch are separated on the doserless model. Having the grind switch on the front is convenient.

The only things keeping Rocky from getting five stars have to do with the grind settings. On the coarse end of the adjustment, Rocky just doesn’t quite make it to a real french press grind. This is an issue that was noted on coffeegeek reviews and which I didn’t care about when I bought the machine, but which I now wish I had considered. Also, and this is a niggling point, the grind adjustments are stepped, not stepless. In a perfect world, I like to think that all grinders should be stepless like the Mazzer Mini that I occasionally get to play with. That said, the steps are close enough that I have not found a problem in getting the grind I desire, and the system of a release button on the collar that adjusts the burrs is slick and simple.

If you are in the market for a top end consumer coffee grinder, take a good long look at the doserless Rocky. When a Mazzer Mini would be overkill (and overpriced), but you want something closer to commercial grade than a Solis Maestro, Rocky hits the sweet spot.

Piece Of Junk
This coffee mill is a piece of junk. Mine broke in less than 3 months. It builds up a nasty static charge, which makes the ground coffee fly all over the place. Save your money, and buy a Krups instead.

I love my B&D Coffee Grinder and recommend for basic bean grinding
I love this grinder because it it quick, stores the coffee into a separate container (unlike many other grinders in this price range, which require you to dump out the contents after grinding), as well as stores the extra for the next time already with a cap in place. No second steps, no mess, no fuss. Grinds fine to course. For this price, and for basic coffee bean grinding, it is excellent. If you want fancier grinds, (ie> expresso), then expect to pay a much higher price. I am quite pleased with my purchase.

Avoid this item!
This is the first time I have felt compelled to write a review of a product I have purchased. I recently purchased this coffee grinder at a local hardware store because I had heard that the burr mill was a superior type of grinder. While it is true that the burr mill does provide a uniform grind, I found this model to be extremely messy: for reasons I couldn’t ascertain, my kitchen counter was covered with coffee dust after using it. After less than three weeks, the motor burned out and it failed to work at all. Perhaps I wasn’t vigilant enough about cleaning the mechanism, but I was nonetheless extremely upset that the unit broke down so quickly! I felt compelled to report my negative experience with this Black and Decker product to all potential purchasers. Buyer beware!

Built to last – no longer than 90 days
The new standard at Black and Decker seems to be, design it well, engineer it well, and then build it poorly. This is not the only B&D product that has failed me within months of purchase, but it is definitely the last. No B&D product will ever grace my home again.

During the breif period that it actually functioned, it did a good job grinding beans. The problem is, it was so poorly manufactured with such cheap materials that it simply ground ITSELF to pieces within months, and I didn’t even use it that much, grinding no more than 10 tablespoons of coffee a week.

In the first few weeks of use, a plastic tab that is supposed to prevent beans from popping back up from the grinder broke off. The simple impact of beans popping against it cracked the plastic off. It was still useable, though it invariably left beans in the cup.

Within another few weeks, cracks began to appear in the feed cup, again, not from abuse but from simple, light use..

This morning, while grinding, a horrendous noise. Sure enough, another plastic piece had cracked off and this time fallen into the grinder.

As noted above, this is not the first structural failure of a B&D product for me. I don’t think you could get worse quality if the assembly crew were wearing mittens.

shopping for a new one…
I agree with the other reviewers…save your $$. The plastic teeth in the grinder broke, it’s messy, loud, and cheaply made. If you grind beans daily like we do, don’t buy this.

Too Many Problems
When it works this grinder works well. Its great for use with a French press, the grinds come out consistent and large enough not get clog the mesh filter. Unfortunately though, I had my 2 copies of this model break on me in less than a month. The first one I got had a defect in the fineness knob. When I turned it I could hear the gearing grind and all the coffee came out finely ground. I returned this one and got a new one. This one worked quite well at first, but after 3 weeks of moderate use it refused to turn on. Not quite feeling like waiting to get a third one I decided to void the warrantee and attempt to fix it myself. Once it got it taken apart I could see that the switch to detect that the lid was on had come out of place. Nothing had broken so I put it back the way it was originally and it came loose again the moment I put the lid back on. This seems to be a pretty major design flaw considering it left the grinder completely inoperable. I’m happy with my grinder now that I’ve disabled the switch, but due to its flaws I would not recommend this grinder to anyone.

The 10 % Rule
I have had this machine just short of two years now. I find it an awesome machine for the money. Yes I agree that once in a while the beans catch and it needs a bump. The static problem has long been gone in mine. But, as far as the grind size range, it works great in mine, large enough for the French press and fine enough for the Espresso maker. If yours doesn’t it is more than likely operator error. Put it together correctly, keep it clean and watch it work, all easy task if you pay attention. We grind over three pounds a week in my house, in all grind sizes. I would be hard pressed to get another model other than this one.

Why four stars you ask, because it doesn’t fill itself and make my coffee for me!

grinds coffee too fine for french press but otherwise small and unobtrusive
I live in Manhattan and have no counterspace. This one takes up as little space as possible, and looks good, so I don’t have to resent its existence every day. As noted by others, coffee beans have to be full to the max in the hopper or it makes a funny whirring sound (in short, there always has to be lots of beans in there).

My gripe is that even at the coarsest setting, I find the coffee grinds to be too fine for the french press – makes super silty, muddy coffee (feels like it’s cancer causing). I wonder if the more expensive grinders would be able to grind coarser than this, but oh well, I was too cheap.

I bought the belgian filter / filtre belgique just to be able to get value out of this grinder, and that’s been working well, although I miss the french press coffee.

Pros and Cons after 10 Months of Use
After a “long term road test” of this Krups Coffee Grinder, I wanted to summarize my experience. I have used it pretty much daily. It replaced another Krups grinder (blade not burr) that I had used off and on for 20+ years.

Good:

1. Easy to use, particularly for getting beans into it and ground coffee out of it.

2. Does not get coffee everywhere (a key modification was to put it on a little tray that catches the ground coffee that falls out as you remove the ground coffee container).

3. Moderate noise level. It is not “quiet” and has gotten noisier over time. That makes me suspect that the noise level of individual units may vary a bit. But it is much quieter than the Krups blade unit it replaced.

4. Has been reliable. My previous burr grinder (different brand) failed within one week.

Bad:

1. Plastic grounds reservior is very staticy, so grounds adhere to the plastic. I carry the container to the sink, and give a sharp rap on the bottom of the sink, to get everything loose off.

2. Beans do not feed evenly, sometimes the grinder freewheels with no beans feeding down and you need to whack it. I found that the grind affects this (finer grinds seem to feed better) and the beans; very oily (i.e. dark roast) beans do not feed as well as drier beans.

I still have ranked it 4 stars as I thought it was a very good value. It has lasted nearly a year without an issue and I have worked around or adapted to the shortcomings. I would not spend money to replace it: it meets my needs.

A coffee-lover’s must-have!
What a unique machine! This is as close to commercial quality as you will get for home use. It is pricey, but the quality remains long after the price is forgotten. I love the Proline products offerred by KitchenAid. In fact, I own four of them..I consider them as decorative accessories in my kitchen! We grind fresh coffee every morning, and treat ourselves to a terrific cup of coffee to start our day. The KitchenAid proline guarantee is another selling point. I gave 4 stars. The only thing I’d like to see improved is the thickness of the removable glass jar. It’s been all right so far, but I am aware that I have to be careful with it. If you are considering purchasing this coffee grinder, treat yourself…you won’t be sorry!

Finally, a neat (not messy) coffee grinder!

Still, manufacturers are still pumping-out static causing plastic coffee grinders spurring coffee grinds all over my clean kitchen causing us 5+ minutes of additional clean up time in the mornings! (Yes, I timed my cleanup time one morning. Multiplying 5 minutes by 365 days shows I have reason to complain!)

The “Pro Line” is much quieter then the lightweight plastic models and I literally only get one maybe two grinds on the counter tops versuses the 2 million plus spurred grinds on the counters using all the other cheaper plastic models!

Very clean! Almost very quiet! No stupid timers! No clinging or clumping of grinds! Grinds are very uniform and easily spill into the destination source. Flip of a switch & voila! Within a minute, I can have my morning coffee perking.

Yes, $190. But, maybe it’s really made of gold and painted a wonderful color of grey???

I also own their pearl grey Professional 6 Qt Mixer, so this unit is a great compliment and match for my kitchen.

Probably the best non commercial grinder available
I researched grinders quite a bit before purchasing the Kitchen-Aid. I really wanted one that would give me quality grinds for espresso drinks without having to pay $400.00 or so.

I do not have experience with conical burrs as opposed to the flat burrs which the Kitchen-Aid employs BUT I would guess they are similar. The grounds I get for espresso truly are fluffy and exceptional. The noise level is not very high either. Especially compared to your average blade grinder. Let’s just say I don’t need to bring this unit to the bathroom and wrap it in a towel if guests are over…

My only compaint about it would be that invariably I need to “help” the beans along as they usually clog up in the area just above the burrs. Also I get a few that hang out on the edge of the hopper base. Having said that, if I knew this going in I STILL would have purchased it without hesitation.

For the money I say this is an exceptional value, and let’s face it value is king.

Be certain you are looking at the “Pro Line” grinder as Kitchen Aid has a lower level one which I felt was inferior. Also, I was not able to find one in a brick & mortar store.

Coffee grinder
Product is bullet proof and effective. A djustable grind options adequate for 99% of population. Cleaning easy and accessable. Original glass ground coffee catcher did not fit correctly – KitchenAid Pro Line customer service immediately responsive with replacement. Instruction book easily understood and well made. Pearl Metallic color probably fits most kitchen decors. Grinding noise level quite low compared to other burr grinders and especially low compared to blade grinders. I own three of these grinders. I don’t anticipate needing another. Best price point found on Amazon.

Not worth the expense or the hype
I bought the first model of this grinder in 2003. And then KitchenAid sent me the revised version under warranty. But it still has an inherent design flaw that does not allow beans (especially dark roasted/oily beans) to feed from the upper hopper into the grinder. So if you want any coffee you have to stand there and poke at the beans with a chopstick. This grinder is definitely heavy. It is cast in beautiful powder coated steel. The upper hopper is made of thick, solid glass. Static control on the lower glass grounds jar is good. The grinder settings are not fine enough. Even when you clean this model properly (which is tricky and messy) you still do not get consistent grind sizes. I have found it diffcult to get a decent espresso grind out of it. When you do it is not consistent. In the end I gave this KitchenAid the old college try but I’m not happy with it and will be seeking an alternative.

Gave it away after 2 uses
I don’t understand why the manufacturers of these machines seem to think people want to stand there with their finger on the button while the grinder works its way loudly and slowly through a container of coffee beans. A pretty basic design flaw, in my opinion. I have better things to do with my time. Gave it away to a yard sale after 2 uses.

clogs
This dcg49 clogs at least once on a 2 oz grind. You have to take apart and clear grinds from chute. I wanted to like, but in frustration returned to store.

Forget about it!
I tried, I really tried to like this grinder. But after weeks of frustrating shaking, clogging & more grounds spilled on the counter than in my coffee filter, I gave up and bought…a manual grinder! I may expend more energy in the grinding, but none in the clean up the DeLonghi DCG49 required.

What a cool little gadget…you put whole coffee beans in and it grinds them just the way you want. Who would have though… a little noisesy, but works very well. clean.

Great coffee!
This is the first coffee grinder that I have ever purchased and I am extremely pleased. That being said I have to say that I find it a speedy little unit that is easy to clean and makes just the noise you would expect! I also have to say that I purchase high quality coffee and I make full pots of strong coffee without having to grind a second run of beans…

Little Red Magician, but my beef is with Amazon…
This little red kitchen buddy is a whiz with the coffee beans, and looks stellar next to the Cuisinart 12-cup CoffeeMaker. My main beef is with Amazon, who, a week after my purchase, lowered the price another $3 bucks. Oh well! Sunny cheery RED and great coffee sure are an eye opener, any day of the week! I haven’t had any problems with this grinder, but have only had it a short time. To be fair about Amazon… I love their choices, and I’ve had a specially fun time with creating my Red Kitchen! Amazon has a very good Red selection! Now if Frigidaire would only come back out with their Poppy Red appliances (1970s or early 80s)… I left my Fridge and stove in the house I sold in New Mexico in 1985, and sorely regret I did!

Grinds beautifully, but the switch often jams
Though this grinder does a nice job grinding my coffee beans, the switch mechanism has little margin for error. About once a week, when I try to operate the grinder, the switch will not engage and the grinder will not operate. Only after I empty the beans out and give the machine a good shake will the lid finally go on tightly and the switch will engage. I am not particularly messy. This should not happen with a 3 month old coffee grinder.

This grinder was a replacement for a seven year old Krups that I discarded due to the dullness of the blades (not surprising), but I never had a switch problem with that one, or the new Krups I bought for home. I regret not sticking with Krups.

Don’t Overfill
I thought it would go well with my new Cuisinart Coffee Maker. It seems to take longer than my old Krups unit. If you overfill it simply won’t grind the beans. Once you get the hang of the amount of beans to place in, it works OK but still seems to take longer than other grinders.

Disappointed!
This grinder has a small capacity [not as advertised]. If you follow directions, it will only grind enough for 4 cups at a time. Also, for some reason it generates a static charge and there is coffee dust all over the counter after emptying it. The cord is stiff and the cord storage is inconvienient. Finally, it is much more noisy than my old one.

Piece of crap
I was looking for a larger coffee grinder and read that a burr grinder was the way to go. I bought this because after researching all the options, It appeared that any burr grinder in an affordable price range didn’t get very good reviews. However someone gave a suggestion on how you could adjust it and make it better. It must have been a Melitta representative that wrote it because I’ve been adjusting and re-adjusting for an hour and All I’m getting is chunks. It doesn’t matter what setting you have it on. My little ten year old mill grinder does a much better job. The worst part is and BUYER BEWARE! I thought I could return it. But I failed to read the fine print and now have realized, that Amazon does not support a “completely satisfied” return policy. They will only accept returns unused and unopened. So why would you return something before trying it out to find out if you liked it? Consequently, learning from my mistakes, I don’t think I will be shopping on Amazon anymore. I want to be able to return things that are crap, such as this Melitta Burr Coffee grinder that doesn’t work.

I’m cheap, what can I say?
I bought this grinder on sale at a kitchen outlet store for $19.99. ‘Know what you get for $19.99? A $19.99 burr grinder! ‘Nough said!

Don’t expect any customer service from Melitta
Don’t expect any customer service from Melitta. Burr mills are for grinding coffee very fine (espresso) to coarse. This one will not grind fine enough for espresso. I contacted Melitta and they referred me to the people that manufacture this product for them. Was put on hold for 22 minutes and then was told that some burr mills do not grind fine enough for espresso. They were unwilling to do anything. Called Melitta back and was basically told that I am stuck with it. They should not be able to label this as a burr mill. Another consumer ripoff by a company that does not care after the sale.

ABSOLUTELY THE WORST APPLIANCE I’VE EVER BOUGHT!
I bought this “burr coffee grinder, because it was around $34. When it ground up the coffee into pieces and would not work properly, I should have promptly returned it. I didn’t. That was my second mistake!

After reading on this site about a way to deviate or make this grinder produce a finer coffee, I spent forever, taking the appliance apart and moving the blades closer together.

This made it acceptable only after running each batch through twice, but it was always the biggest mess to deal to clean up and deal with.

It broke after a few months, and I have just bought a Mr. Coffee Coffee Grinder at Wal-Mart that seems to work for my needs.

In the past I have had a $20 Krups or Braun, and this $20 Mr. Coffee (not a burr grinder) has fine, medium, and coarse settings. It is less messy than the Melitta by far and a little neater than the previous Krups or Braun that I had until it broke.

I don’t normally write reviews, but read other reviews religiously. Just wanted to warn future consumers of this item that should be discontinued.

Fair Performer But Messy
I just tossed this grinder in the trash can after over 2 years of faithfull service. In fact it outlasted a $100+ Krups coffeemaker. I like my coffee ground very fine so the grounds would migrate from the cup down into the motor housing and then sift out through the vent in the bottom creating quite a mess on the countertop. This morning at 6am after making it’s last pot of coffee I decided it was time to clean the coffee grounds from inside the grinder. Simple to do…un-plug, remove three little phillips screws, and dump the old coffee. Everything went as planned until I tried to get it back together. No matter how hard I tried I could not get the baseplate to line up with the motor and the screw holes and the wiring was in the way… so long story short I declared it a gonner. Goodbye old friend, you chewed up many a bag of Verona Blend.

Just got home from Target with the Mr Coffee BMX3. I’ve always wanted to try a burr grinder so I thought I’d give it a try. Of course I bought it before I read the reviews, which are about 50/50 love/hate. But, none of the other coffee grinders get completly glowing reports either, so what the heck.

Burned it up on my toaster oven…
This coffee grinder worked very well until I put it on top of a toaster oven…L O L. It still works, but as one review stated, it throws coffee grounds through the bottom. The bottom melted. This caued the blade shaft to become misaligned. I like it enough to buy it again.

They’re all the same
All of these people are on here complaining about this grinder. Any grinder that you get under $30 or so is going to go out on you. You get what you pay for. I’ve actually never had a grinder over $30 so I can’t say that they are any more reliable than this one. All I’m saying is, it’s not that big of a deal. Spend $15 on this and expect to get a new one next year.

I’m glad to see these other reviews. I’ve had mine for about 8 months and it just died this morning. Makes a noise as if the motor is going, but the blade just doesn’t move. I guess I’m going to have to invest a little more money into a new one.

Grinder commits suicide!
I used this thing on weekends for about a year, then one day, it just decided to die. One morning after I had finished with my grinding activities, I had just left the top on the counter. There were still some ground in the grinder when all the sudden, it just started grinding away! I have not been able to get these grinds out of my kitchen, they keep appearing on the floor, counter, baby, etc! I have never moved so fast in the morning. Don’t buy one.

Reliable and Trustworthy
I have had this grinder for years and it works just fine. A little dust from static and simple cleaning are no big deal. I use it 3 to 4 times a day every day and it just runs and runs. YOu cannot go wrong for $50. This is true of all Braun products.

Grinds too coarse; overly “safe”; nice styling
The main problem with this grinder is that if you want a fine grind for espresso or drip, it does not grind finely enough.

I bought this as a replacement for its predecessor, the kmm-20, which lasted me for more than 20 years of nearly daily use. It would have lasted longer, too, had I not kept running it when clogged during a brain crash.

The footprint is not quite as small as the kmm-20 was, but it runs much quieter. However, the grind is nowhere near as fine as the kmm-20, and I get better results with my simple blade grinder.

The grind adjustment works by screwing the input hopper in and out, changing the clearance between a fixed grinding burr wheel, and a driven burr wheel. You can’t screw it in far enough to get a sufficiently fine grind. Also, unlike the kmm-20 predecessor, you can’t completely screw it out, either. This will prevent you from ever cleaning out any foreign matter that may find its way into between the grinding burrs. It has been my experience that bean coffee occasionallly has little pebbles that can get caught in here. Since you can’t unscrew the grinder, this also means you can’t wash it. This apparently is a “safety” feature.

You can, however, lift out the main part of the hopper for washing. Unfortunately, they forgot to mention that in the instructions. Once you lift out the hopper, you can stick your fingers into the grind area, and run the grinder without any interlock, so the above “safety” feature seems a bit superfluous.

I called Braun’s customer service to ask about details of this grinder and the one I owned prevously. I ended up in a customer service center in Jamaica (the country, not the part of Queens), staffed by people who were 100% clueless.

The styling, however, is quite nice, and the hoppers are easy to use. On the unit I bought (which I returned for the reasons above), the on/off timer knob was too hard to turn.

A very nice and useful mill. Makes good fine espresso coffee powder that can also be used in traditional filters.

Design plus Quality
I have now used this coffee grinder daily for more than a year without interruption. It is a clean, simple design which produces perfect results. I have a Bosch Porsche design coffeemaker, and the tandem is excellent. I am a coffee addict and I would recommend both products, although the coffeemaker is certainly overpriced.By contrast, the grinder is and has proved to be a bargain. I researched this thing thoroughly before buying.

consistent grind, long life
I have tried several brands of burr grinders over the years, and this one lasts the longest, grinds consistently from espresso to drip to press, and is no better or worse as far as cleaning or messiness. Unless your are willing to spend $200+ for a professional grinder, this one is great.

Counterpoint to negative reviews
I’ve been using this model of the Capresso burr grinder for about four years. I am bewildered by some of the negative comments I see on Amazon, for they are directly contradictory to my experience. The only disadvantage that I’ll concede on this model is that it’s not the right choice for high volume grinding for a large number of people. At home for an individual or a couple, it’s hard to imagine a better solution or a better value. The price is great for a burr grinder. Mine has been producing accurate grinds without fail for the entire four-year period I’ve owned it. Visitors who grind their own coffee have commented that it’s comparatively quiet. It won’t dust your kitchen as long as you don’t forget to slide the hopper into place (knock on wood). It has 1-9 coarseness settings. It does seem that if you ALWAYS use the same grind, it kind of “settles in” to that setting. It may be a good idea to use varying settings occasionally. Highly recommended for any home user.

not a good choice
This product is not well built or long lasting. Mine stopped working after 60 days. My Krups mill has lasted 15 years but is not right for a uniform espresso grind so I purchased the Capresso. I agree the ground coffee recepticle is poorly designed & makes a mess but my primary objection is the poor quality of materials & construction.

Recommended for home use
I bought this item for use in an office of 40 people, which is NOT recommended for this product. It’s been receiving constant use for 3 months with only minor problems. It is slightly messy, but that is inherent to all home grinders. The mess that it does make is easy to clean with a damp cloth. The entire unit is easy to clean as well. The grinder is much quieter than I was expecting. (If you’re looking for a silent grinder, there is no such thing.) I would recommend this product for home use to a casual coffee drinker. A coinsurer might not like it; however, the size of the grinds can be inconsistent at times.

Does The Job Quite Well Considering……..
I have had this model grinder (in black) in my kitchen for 5 years. It does a great job. While it is not a professional grinder which would cost hundreds (or, in some cases, over a thousand) of dollars, nor is it meant to serve as an espresso grinder, it grinds the coffee beans for a standard pot of coffee evenly and quickly. Realizing that it needs an occasional cleaning, this is easily done. It doesn’t spew grounds all over the kitchen when it is properly used.

I also have another one that is 10 years old (in white). I use it infrequently for guests who like flavored coffee which tends to be much oiler, and thus needs a little more cleaning. Both make noise as this is what a small burr grinder does. Both of them also grind evenly which is necessary to get a good pot of coffee. And neither grind the coffee to where the grounds are hot (as a blade grinder) which will literally cook out the flavor before the water ever hits the grounds in the brewer.

Having owned a coffee business for several years in the past, I prefer to grind my straight coffee and my flavored coffee in separate appliances so as not to impart artificial flavors onto straight country-of-origin coffees. I have had many customers who were very happy with this grinder. If anyone has a problem with this grinder I would suggest re-reading the instructions. Without abuse, it does the job satisfactorily for a small home appliance. And the price is very reasonable for a little machine that has performed for many years.

Far inferior to a blade grinder
First of all – let me say that most blade grinders do a perfectly acceptable job for most coffee-brewing tasks. If you want to grind coffee, and don’t want to mortgage your house to do it – get a quality blade grinder and you’ll be happy.

Then there is this thing. At 2-3 times the price of a blade grinder, one would assume it does a better job. It does not.

One supposed advantage of a burr grinder is that they should make a nice, uniform grind. This is important especially for espresso and french-press brewing methods – espresso won’t come out correctly if the ground coffee isn’t fine and uniform and with a press, if there are fine grains mixed in with the course stuff, it will pass through the filter on the press and you’ll have grain in your brewed coffee. Not good.

My experience with my grinder is that no matter where you set the grind setting, it will be really coarse and not uniform. You’ll end up with a lot of coarse grain and a fair amount of fine grain sprayed all over the inside of the container. So it doesn’t work for espresso because it can’t grind fine enough, it doesn’t really work for drip because it can’t even grind fine enough for that, and it doesn’t work for a press because while the coarseness is spot-on, the fine grains it produces will pass through the filter and both clog the filter, making it hard to push the press down, and get into your coffee cup.

Also not cool:

It is loud – very, very loud.

It is messy.

The lid doesn’t seal tight, so it isn’t an acceptable place to store your beans.

The container that catches your ground coffee is hard to clean out and tends to spray electrically-charged coffee grounds all over the place when you open it or when you are brushing it out.

It does electrically charge the coffee – which is annoying.

The beans often do not gravitate down into the grinding mechanism – which is a problem because it measures your coffee based on a timer – so if the burrs are spinning free during any time of that grinding process, you end up shorted on coffee.

Speaking of that measuring process – it is stupid – you never get the right amount of coffee – you move this slider to the numeric amount of coffee you want and then press the grind button. It often shorts you becasue the burrs spin free at least once during the process and about every 10th time you use it, the timer fails to stop the grinding and it will just grind every last bean in the hopper until you stop it.

The grind-fineness control is a joke. You can choose between fine (ie, large chunks with a mix of fine mixed in) to very coarse (ie, large chunks with a mix of fine mixed in).

All in all, a very disappointing product. Go with a blade grinder for 15 bucks or a Mazzer Mini or Rocky for 250-400 bucks. Or get it ground for free.

Makes a great door stop!
It’s expensive for a door stop but that’s what it does best. I’m a two time loser. The first one I bought, I thought worked reasonably will for about a year before the plastic guide that regulates the grind setting broke off. After that it would only produce a very course grind. Like a fool, I ordered a second one. This one would not grind anything roasted much beyond a light city roast. If you like even a medium roast forget it. If you roast to the second “crack” or get even the slightest release of oil from the beans you better be prepared to use your fingers (don’t worry it doesn’t grind them either) or I also find if I keep stirring and poking with a chopstick I can grind 2.25oz of beans in about three or four minutes at a medium drip setting. If you are hoping for a expresso grind forget it.

I would recommend the cheapest burr grinder you can find over the Solis G385. It will be messier but will work much better. Mellita for instance makes one that will grind circles around the Solis. Don’t waste your money but if you must, mine will be listed on eBay under under doorstops.

Worst of the worst – cheap plastic build, jams every use
Have owned this grinder for about 4 months. Purchased based on reading several good reviews. I thought I had purchased a lemon when the unit continually jammed and then the timer broke with gentle three times a week usage. So I sent back to the company after it took over a week to get through to service for an RMA, not to mention having to pay expensive courier shipping and insurance, they don’t offer to take care of that part. They did replace the broken timer successfully, and stated that the unit was jammed due to fine grinding of dark roast. Hello? What did I buy a grinder for? But anyway, when I got it back and it immediately jammed again, guess what? I was grinding medium roast to a medium grind. This is the worst kitchen item I have ever purchased, hand down. I would not say this without giving the company a chance to fix or replace what I thought might be a lemon, but apparently that can’t be done on such a poor product.

If you get one as a gift, return it quick and get the credit slip!

Nice grinder
If you need to grind espresso or French press this is supposed to be the best general purpose grinder under $200.

If you’re even more serious about grinding espresso you may want to look at something like a Rancilio Rocky, $295 or Pasquini Moka Grinder @ $499

This can be considered high end for home use especially for a drip coffee maker. (that’s what I use it for). It also can be considered a good upgrade if you want something better than a blade grinder or inexpensive burr grinder or a backup espresso grinder if you already have a serious espresso grinder. (This was my upgrade from a Braun burr grinder).

It’s also not intended for commercial use, it won’t hold up to that kind of constant use but I think it’s a great grinder for all aspects of home/office use if you’re looking for a heavy duty conical burr grinder.

I narrowed my choice to the Solis or the Capresso. They’re nearly the same but the Solis was designed and assembled in the USA, the Capresso is made in China.

This is easy to dissasemble and clean. The plastic adjusting mechanisim that rotates and holds the grinder burr simply slips out and drops back in. It’s not under any stress and isn’t going to break unless it’s put together wrong.

It’s quiet, low static with less mess. There’s going to be some mess, it’s just a lot less than the high rpm, less expensive grinders.

It’s smooth operating with enough weight to feel like an appliance and not a toy. It’s all I need for my high-end drip and low-end espresso needs.

Excellent Machine
Bought this to use with my rancilio. It seems to have made a huge difference. I thought there was something wrong with the espresso maker as my espresso was always flat and thin tasting. Freshly ground beans is the way to go – vast improvement over preground espresso (illy’s or lavazza). I would have given it 4.5 stars, the only thing holdng it back is the silly doser. Either I’m not using it right, or its just not well designed, But everything else makes this a worthwhile purchase to those coffee freaks who can afford it. Works for me!
Its amazingly quiet considering whats happening to those poor little beans…It gives me just the grade of grind I need for my espresso machine to get a perfect shot…but it gets a 4 rather than 5 because there were no anti-skid pads on the base (I think they may have been missing…or maybe they just don’t provide them even though there is a place for them…

Makes a huge difference, some features confusingly lacking.
I got this to accompany my Gaggia 35005 Carezza, because had been having inconsistent results with blade grinders, and store bought pre-ground wasn’t doing it for me. This thing makes a *huge* difference, it’s incredible. For that particular espresso machine, I found that a grind setting of 9 works great.

The problems are the doser doesn’t actually neatly dose anything, sometimes I have to hit it 5 times, sometimes 3… puzzling. You can eye it, but the thing only appears to work if you grind a bunch of beans, and make more than one drink. First drink, it takes a few pulls to get the grounds to the front for the doser. Also, there’s no neat way to only grind what you need to use, looks like some experimentation and another timer will be required.

Another issue is it looks like you have to actually disassemble it, which is not a simple task, to clean it thoroughly… or really even at all.

Overall, it’s quiet, creates perfect grounds, has a *ton* of settings (although, I can only see myself using two, one for coffee, one for espresso), but the doser is garbage. I might have opted for a cheaper model, knowing this… but my lattes are perfect now.

I always wanted to be able to grind my coffee for espresso to fit my machine. There are many things that influence process of making espresso wright. With in store grinding I ended up with too fine or too coarse coffee and consequently with bad results. I finally don’t need to worry. This Gaggia grinder is perfect match and absolutely comparable to pro grinders. Noise level is lower than I expected and functionality is excellent.

There is no substitute for making your espresso by yourself from beans to cup. No automatic machines, doesn’t matter how good, can give your that pleasure. Now I have it.

When my automtic espresso machine went I decided to purchase a more labor-intensive machine where the parts could be replaced. That meant grinding up beans fresh. So, I decided on the Gaggia 8002 MDF Burr Grinder. The grinder is definitely pricey, but it’s only about $60 more expensive than the Starbucks grinders, which I had previously and lasted only a year or so. The Gaggia grinder has a wide variety of settings, which allow you to easily grind beans for a standard coffee machine or for espresso. I recently purchased another grinder to hold just decaf beans. The only reasons that I did not give the product 5 stars were (1) price and (2) not easy to clean. If you can get by the price and settle with the fact that a grinder will always have coffee bean remnants, than this is the grinder for you.

After researching espresso grinders for many months, and narrowing my list of worthy candidates, it came time to buy. The problem I then had to deal with was the size of my budget. Knowing how vital the quality of espresso grind is to the quality of espresso shot, regardless of espresso machine quality, i decided on either a Mazzer or Macap grinder. I own a Solis sl70 machine with a non-pressurized basket, which is a capable little machine if matched with a quality grinder. Without a good grinder your espresso will be mediocre at best. With this knowledge in the back of my head, I was still hesitant to spend over $450 for a Mazzer(my Solis was only $350 after all). I set out to find a good grinder in the $200-250 range. After finding several crappy, plastic variations of the same thing, I stumbled on the Roma put out by Vaneli’s. I took a chance on it, and have been so impressed. It is made in Milan, Italy by a commercial grinder company and labeled Vaneli’s. This thing is built like a tank, weighing at least 10 pounds, and the grind is more consistent than any I have seen, even from large commercial grinders. This grinder transformed my coffee making. In about two minutes I had it dialed in giving me amazing, 25 second, crema filled shots. My buddy ordered one as well and has never pulled such beautiful shots from his Francis X5. This grinder is well worth the $200 selling price, nothing out there comes close to this level of quality.

Now that I’ve had this grinder over a month I decided to write a review. At $200 this is the best burr grinder I could find. I almost bought a Rancillio Rocky but decided to give this one a try instead. I have a Gaggia Coffee Deluxe machine and w/ this grinder and some Café Vita Café Del Sol I’m able to make sublime espresso w/ loads of crema. Additionally I can make some pretty righteous French press too. As for the doser size my Gaggia porta-filter is the typical size of a commercial machine so I think it fits perfectly.

For 200 bucks this grinder is everything I could want. I love that I can adjust it all the way from perfect little French Press chunks to Turkish Powder that will easily choke my machine. In between I’ve got it totally dialed in to make consistent ~25 second shots that almost never disappoint. It is true that many variables affect the outcome of a shot but surely a high quality grinder is one of the most important. As many people have already noted you WILL NEVER make a great shot without a great grinder.

I ordered this grinder with some trepidation since I had never even heard of a “Roma” grinder. Moreover, my initial reaction upon opening the box that the grinder arrived in was pure irritation, since it arrived without any paperwork, no manual, and no instructions of any kind. Based on this, my initial reaction was just to return the grinder.

However, after examining the grinder carefully, I realized that it had been made by Bregant in Milan (good news) in 2004 (which means it must have sat in a warehouse somewhere for awhile) and that for all practical intents and purposes, this grinder seems to be the same as a Pasquini K2 Moka (generally sold at more than twice the price of this one) with a slightly different housing and hopper.

Accordingly, I decided to give it a try. And, I must say, I am very impressed. The grinder grinds extremely evenly with no detectable dust. Moreover, the grounds feel cool to the touch out of the grinder, and there was no static (I have a humidity meter and the humidity in my house is a bit over 50% … perhaps there might be some static under drier circumstances, but I had no problems with static at all).

But the real proof of the grinder is in the espresso. And again I must say I am very pleased. Right off the bat, after adjusting the grinder until the grounds looked and felt about right for espresso, I more than doubled the crema of my shots (over a quarter of an inch of pure beautiful crema) without making any other adjustments.

I should note here that I personally think most baristas have a tendency to grind their coffee just a little too fine. Sure, espresso needs to be ground fine, but it should not be so fine that it tastes bitter. I have found that grinding not so fine, but tamping a bit harder to compensate, gives me the kind of espresso I really like.

In any case, the setting I prefer on this grinder is at just below seven. And it turns out that at this level, even though the coffee looks similar to the output of my previous grinder, since this grinder grinds more evenly than my previous one, it also calls for a harder tamping of the grounds at about the same average level of fineness. This makes sense, since there is virtually no floury dust in the grounds to clog things up in the filter.

Now for the negatives: First, depending on the shape of your portafilter, it may not be all that easy to trigger the grinder by placing the portafilter below the spout. Next, if you remove your filterbasket from the portafilter and try to grind directly into the filterbasket, the grounds will not fall into the center of the basket but rather to the side of the basket that is closer to the grinder. So, if you want to grind directly into the basket you have to keep turning it as you grind. This can get a bit messy.

Based on this, I decided to try things a bit differently. Instead of grinding directly into the portafilter, I grind into a small measuring cup instead. For this purpose I use a measuring cup that is deeper, but has a smaller diameter, than my filterbasket. This measuring cup has a handle on the side and it sits perfectly on the activator knob for starting the grinder and receiving the grounds. While I am grinding I leave the portafilter on my espresso machine until I have the dose I want in the measuring cup. To get the grounds into the portafilter, I then place the portafilter over the measuring cup and turn the two over so that the grounds fall into the filterbasket. This works perfectly every time with no mess at all.

This is not a grinder for everyone. Make sure that you really want a doserless grinder and also that you are prepared to make some adjustments for getting the coffee into your portafilter before buying this grinder. However, if you are willing to make the proper adjustments, this grinder is a steal at $199.

No Lifespan!
I loved this grinder when we first got it because we use a french press, an automatic coffee pot, and an espresso maker. The array of grinds is wonderful! If it only lasted…. I had the same problem as everyone else, the ring broke & I found myself shoving paper in just to get a seal. Would be a superior product if they made it to last.

You get what you pay for….
I really liked this little grinder (“liked” being the key word here). The internal cord storage was easy to use and kept my countertops clear of cords. The one touch start and automatic shutoff so I didn’t have to hold the button. Several different grinds. What more could I ask for? How about a longer lifespan? I had the same problem the first reviewer did. After only a few months of use, the ring at the top broke making it impossible for the cap to push the safety interlock switch. Walla….instant paperweight!

Broke after about six months
I purchased this grinder and was very pleased with its performance. I really like its compact size, the ability to choose grind and to just press the button so I could fill my coffee maker with water while it ground. I also like that the cord winds into itself and it stores easily. However, after about six months of daily use, the plastic which holds the metal cup and blades to the body broke, rendering the grinder useless. I was very disappointed. I don’t know if it’s a design flaw or just a fluke with mine, but I probably won’t purchase it again.

It’s pretty basic
It’s OK, but it’s pretty basic. You have to load it every time, adn when done, you have to turn it over and hit it so the coffee will separate from the grinder. Also, as the last reviewer said, it is hard to work the lever to get the amount of cups you want. Sometimes, you have to go from the top and count the clicks to know how many cups you want. A good thing about it is that it is really small, so it will not take up much counter space.

Very good, for a blade grinder
This is probably one of the best blade grinders out there. The top locks nicely and serves well as a measuring cup, eliminating the scoop step. It has three coarseness settings that seem to work well enough to differentiate, along with cup amounts. The amount lever is a little hard to tell what cup amount its on, however. Anyways, bottom line: it grinds great with little mess.

Too Messy
Bought this grinder after my Capresso grinder developed a crack in the plastic housing. After using for about two weeks, I have to agree with other reviews that mention “static problem”. The grinds cling to grinder and coffee end up all over the counter when trying to pour into coffee machine. The plastic cover also somewhat awkard to get on and off.

I would not recommend this grinder.

Super Mill
This little mill works great!!! I bought it to grind up spices and herbs and it works fantastic. In no time I had everything done cleaned up and put away. I just might have to try it on coffee.

QUIET IS THE BUZZ WORD AND SO APT
I have purchased a total of 6 of these. I’ve kept 2, one is at the summer cottage and one is for home. I gave the others as gifts and have always received gracious thank you’s. Everyone, with out exception, loves the efficient way it works and most of all how QUIET it is. AND IT IS. This model is top drawer when it comes to grinding without waking everyone while making early morning coffee. If you are looking for a grinder that Works and does so Quietly…….get this, get this, get this!!

Broken after less than 6 months!
I purchased this product several months ago. I was unhappy with it from the start, and now after 6 months of use, the product has broken, and I am shopping for another coffee grinder.

It is messy to use, as is listed in other reviews and it does not grind consistently. You have to open the lid to see if the beans have been ground to your liking. It creates a lot of static electricity, so the grounds get stuck to the cup and lid. If you try to tap them out you get grounds all over your counter.

Most recently, however, it seems something has come loose under the grinding cup. When in use the grinder makes a loud banging sound as if the blade is loose. There is no way to tighten the blade, so into the trash it goes.

Do not buy this grinder!!!!!!!!!!
I have had inexpensive Braun coffee grinders in the past, but decided to splurge on this Cuisinart grinder because I wanted a grinder that could hold more beans. And, hey, Cuisinart has a great reputation and the grinder looked good.

I should have returned the grinder months ago, when I first purchased it and found that it took MUCH longer to grind beans than any grinder I’d used in the past. As the months wore on, it seemed to take longer and longer each time; finally, last night, after grinding for several minutes with little success (there were still big coffee bean chunks in there), the grinder started smoking and died.

SO DON’T BUY IT!

VERY Disappointed!!!
I have been grinding my own coffee beans every morning for many years and have gone through quite a few different grinders. I have always loved Cuisinart products and was very excited to purchase this one, what a mistake! The grinder itself is really noisy and heavy for it’s size. The coffee grinds are never fine enough for my liking and they get stuck up inside the plastic top, making a huge mess and wasting a lot of coffee.

DO NOT WASTE YOUR TIME OR MONEY ON THIS ONE!!!

Love Cuisinart, but stay away from this one
I have Cuisinart all over my kitchen–love the design and quality.

But here’s what’s wrong with this one:

1. grinder is VERY noise (advertised as quiet)

2. when the top lid is removed, excess grinds create a mess

3. nothing automatic here–have to keep checking if grinding is done

Grounds for Disappointment
I was excited to upgrade to this coffee grinder after years of using a cheap Krups model, and I have to say that I am very disappointed with the way this machine grinds coffee. It takes way too long to grind, whether pulsing or grinding continuously. And then the grounds are very uneven. Although the manufacturer says it is grinding slowly to keep the flavor in, every coffee expert I’ve consulted with says the longer coffee grinds, the more it heats up and the more flavor is lost. Even after long grinding, there are large pieces of bean still visible. I was also excited about the machine’s detachable bowl, which does make for easy cleaning. But only of the bowl. The rest of the machine is a pain to clean and no matter how carefully you remove the top, your counter is covered in grounds. I bought a second bowl so that I could grind spices in the same machine, and I think the coffee grinder works better on spices and seeds (such as flax) than it does on coffee. But you still have to clean the entire thing before reusing it, or your spices have a strong coffee flavor from the grounds that are stuck to the protective case. (That plastic case does make grinding quieter, however.) All in all I’m quite disappointed with this purchase. I should have gone farther upscale and gotten a more serious burn grinder, or stuck with my cheap Krups with the slanted bowl base which made even grounds quickly.

I was really looking forward to this LaPavoni grinder so when it turned out to be a dud it was a big disapointment to me.

My previous grinder worked fine for a for a few years. Maybe the best thing about that machine was it didn’t over-promisse — the only thing you could adjust was the coarseness of the grind, and that worked fine. It’s only shortcoming was you had to hold the ON button for the duration of the grinding process, but since that was was usually less than a minute it wasn’t too annoying.

The La Pavoni promisses to grind the “right amount per cup” and has a setting for that but unfortunately that is totally ficticious! It’s “fine to coarse” grind scale is equally ridiculous, all it manages to produce is coffee ground medium fine to dust fine. It also somehow manages to spray ground coffee on the counter. In brief, it irritates me each and every morning!! I can get there without buying a grinder.

No Good for Course Grind (French Press)
“The” reason I bought this grinder was for course ground for my French press. This grinder mixes in finely ground coffee with the course grind. I get accumulation of fine ground at top corner of the collection bin, on top of the coursely ground coffee. This makes icky coffee using a Fr. press. Whereas coffee ground in a store results in properly course ground coffee for my press.

Pavoni tech support (in New York – not Italy) (okay he had a NY Italian accent and tried to be helpful), tried to convince me the problem was my choice of coffee (i.e. large coffee retailer whose roasting makes their beans too oily. I tried some other brands but same problem. The grinder clearly shoots out finely ground coffee mixed in with the course grind. Cleaning the blades, etc. did not help. This gringer is a No-Go for use with French press.

Great unit for the price! Much better then the blade grinders.
If you expect this unit to work as well as a $200 burr grinder, don’t waste your money. However, If you are currently using a blade type coffee grinder and would like to dramatically improve the flavor of your home ground coffee beans, then this unit might be a good chose for you. I didn’t want to spend the $100 plus for a grinder. Frankly, I wasn’t convinced that a blade grinder versus a burr grinder would make a difference in the way the end coffee would taste. When my blade grinder finally died, I decided I wanted to test this theory that a burr grinder produced a better tasting cup of coffee with the same beans I was using in my blade grinder. You will read from many sources on the web that the blade grinders will over heat the beans during the grind, and this is the reason you get an off or bitter flavor. Well, I would feel the ground beans right after blade grinding and I could feel any heat buildup. They weren’t even warm. So how could this cause any off flavor?

Well, I ordered the La Pavoni PA-BURR grinder. As soon as I got it I had to try it out. I placed the grind adjustment about in the middle of the range. I put in the quantity of beans that I needed. Next, I set the grind timer for the number of cups worth of bean I wanted ground and started the grinder. All went well. After making coffee with the same beans I used in my old blade grinder, I was totally shocked that I could truly tell a difference in the flavor! Not just a minor flavor change, but a WOW type of improvement. I’m hooked! A burr grinder does make a flavor improvement, though I don’t buy the theory that it is due to the blade type grinder over heating the beans. I think it has to due more with some of the bean being pulverized so fine that this causes the off flavor, though I really don’t know why.

I have to tell you that I did have one disaster with the La Pavoni PA. After my first use I decided to clean the burr grinder out with a brush. I found the burr grinder comes apart by turning the top burr a few degrees, which unlocks it allowing it to be lifted out. I found it easy to brush out and pretty uneventful, until my next grind! Somehow I didn’t get the burr locked back in place. This caused the grinder to lift the burr out and the beans grind was a mix of all sizes from unground beans to power, not to mention the mess everywhere. So, if you use this grinder and remove the burr at some point, make sure you turn it fully and tightly back in the lock position.

Pros: Very good grind and consistent grind size. Very little dust. The price for what you get. Very easy to use. Noise level is acceptable. The unit looks good. Much better tasting coffee compared to a blade grinder.

Cons: The cup to grind timer doesn’t match with its markings. Makes a mess if you don’t get the burr grinder seated and locked. There is a little bit of grinding dust that can get on my kitchen counter. Not really anymore then my old blade grinder.

Conclusion, I am really enjoying this new grinder. If it were to fail in the future, I might be willing to purchase a higher dollar burr grinder now that I know that it does make a difference in flavor. I have had this unit for a month now and really like it. It truly hit the price value point for me.

Good grinder for the money
This is far from a perfect burr grinder, but it’s really worth the money compared to the inexpensive Krups blade grinder I used to use. The grinds seem to be a lot more consistant. It can get a little messy, but it’s a small price to pay. If you must have perfection spend the few hundred bucks, but if you want an ample grinder this one is it.

Great value coffee grinder
This is a great burr coffee grinder for the money. It runs quiet and the motor is sufficiently powerful. The basket, grind settings and the push button start are all very convenient to use.

Prior to this purchase, I had bought 2 other burr-type grinders that did not come close to the performance of the LaPavoni, but cost the same. Their motors were too small (one burned out after only a month), the basket and controls were not as convenient and they were very NOISY!

Great Grinder
Very satisified with this purchase. The grinder is very easy to use, easy to clean, and holds a lot of coffee beans. To use, simply screw the hopper on and adjust for fineness. Also, the grinder has a safety interlock that prevents it from turning on unless the collecting vessel is properly attached. At first I was surprised by the size of the grinder (I thought it was large) and also thought it was a little noisy, but my 17 month old son has yet to wake up while I’m grinding coffee beans at 6 AM.

My criteria for a burr-grinder was to find the best value under $75.00. I had been considering the brands that I have trusted for many years (Krups, Braun), but I reconsidered after reading the reviews here. I am thrilled with the Ariete! I primarily use it for drip coffee and it fulfills my needs perfectly. It is stable on the countertop (no moving around), easy to operate, and easy to clean. I have been using it for 2 1/2 months now, and the only complaint I have is the noise. This is actually a minor complaint, as all my blade grinders of the past were noisy as well. At this price point, it is such a luxury to simply select the number of cups to grind and press “start.” If you are using a drip coffeemaker, you can’t go wrong with this product.

While it worked, I liked it…but now it’s dead
For the price, this WAS one heck of a deal for the quality of grind you can get from this device. Those that complain of the noise levels, maybe haven’t experienced a burr grinder before. Even commercial ones are pretty loud. I had no complaints until this morning discovered that it would not power on at all. No lights, nothing. Bummer! I’ve used this for right at 1-1/2 weeks before it died. I don’t recommend it but I gave it 2 stars instead of one because I liked it while it worked as it was easy to operate, did (past tense) what it supposed to, and looks fairly nice. Spend the extra and get a longer lasting one than this and save yourself the hassle.

Poor quality – way too loud
The first thing I noticed was how loud this device is – it’ll wake up the whole house! The grinder worked fine for 30 days and then just died. Cheap plastic construction is not made to last. Save your money buy something more expensive and of higher quality.

Outstanding Value / Product
This is our first Coffee Grinder and did not know much about them except what feedback other’s have wrote here. We decided on this Bosch Unit. This grinder simply rocks !! Very simple operation, just remove the lid, add the beans and place the lid back on it and depress the small button and away it goes, we have been grinding our beans very fine and we have it down to a science, we add just enough beans to use for 10 cups of Kona Coffee, and when it is done, just wipe it clean, that simple. This unit is built well, the blades appear very solid and not cheaply made. Would I recommend this Coffee Grinder, YES ! I do not think you can find a better built unit that is priced right …..

Great Grinder
This is the best coffee grinder I’ve ever owned. Mine’s been in a box for several years because someone gave us a K**** grinder for Christmas, and we were using it because it was a gift. We just moved, and couldn’t find the other grinder, but found the Bosch. I couldn’t believe how quiet and fast it was compared to the other grinder. A night and day difference. Those who complain that it doesn’t grind evenly probably haven’t tried pulsing the grinder while grinding (or giving it a quick shake part way through the process). It works great.

By the way, where is everyone getting this “$24.99″ list price? Every site I’ve looked at has it listed at 25 bucks. According to Bosch’s own website (boschappliancesdotcom), the SRP is $19.99. You save $0.00.

Need a replacement blade!
My wife bought me this grinder about ten years ago and I’ve had nothing but good luck with it. I do not grind spices or anything else with it, just coffee, for that purpose it works great. However, the blade recently cracked and fell off. This seemed like a simple problem, just get a new blade. Ha-Ha silly me. The motor still cranks but the grinder is worthless without a blade. I know just get a new one its only $20.00. I’m funny that way, its the principal. If anyone knows where I can get a new blade (…) If not I’ll buy a new one, no biggy.

A nice Grinder
This is the only grinder I’ve ever used, and I like it so far.

I like it for two reasons. First, it’s not very noisy. Second, it really grinds the coffee beans to very fine powder.

I don’t know about other grinder, but I wish the grinder can come with a brush to brush the coffee powder into a coffee machine since it’s not easy to pull out the powder.

Not what I expected
I bought this Bosch Coffee Grinder to use primarily for grinding spices; I frequently have read in food/cooking magazines (e.g., Cook’s Illustrated) that coffee grinders can be used for this purpose. The grinder works fairly well, and the spices were macerated pretty quickly. However, two problems became readily apparent.

First, you cannot remove the inner tray and blades or even get them wet. The directions suggest occasionally wiping them clean with a dry cloth. Unfortunately, this process does not clean it very thoroughly or get rid of any lingering scent. Even if you only use the grinder for coffee, I assume that you’d want to clean it thoroughly to prevent different varieties of coffees from contaminating each other.

Second, it leaks! I ended up with my kitchen counter covered with a fine dusting of spices, even when I pushed on the lid to help make it tighter.

It is possible that these two problems are not an issue for grinding coffee, and the grinder did admittedly crush the spices pretty well. However, I’m very disappointed with this purchase, and it seems as though quite a few other reviewers have been as well. Not recommended.

Poorly designed, messy to use
Ok, bought this model because it was the cheapest burr grinder I could find. Read the reviews and thought some people are just too picky. Well, I got what I paid for. Nice looking grinder and grinds quickly and consistently, but boy is it messy to use! First, bean container lid does not stay on and you have to hold it down during operation. Don’t even think I have a defective unit as I just don’t see how it is designed to stay put. Second, serious static electricity. I know all units have some static buildup during operation, but the grounds get EVERYWHERE with this one. Trust me, you’ll have coffee grinds all over the place when you use it. You’ll just be grinding a ton of coffee each time to last you till the next time you have to use it. Third, the container that collects the ground coffee is also poorly designed. The lid can easily pop off as you’re pulling it out of the unit (and again, there goes all the statically charged coffee grinds all over the place) and it is oddly shaped and has difficulty fitting into my large coffee canister for emptying. A better design would have been to have the lid attached and sliding off partially for emptying. Anyway, I’m putting up with it for now but expect to be buying another one in about a year. Yes it was cheap but I’d recommend paying the extra money to upgrade to a better grinder.

Grinds fairly well
This is a good product for the money. A little messy occasionally, but for the most part, it functions as you’d expect with minimal effort. My grandson has much fun turning the coffee from beans to “squash”, as he says. I’d recommend this grinder for the daily coffee drinker!

bad design, bad performance
This is a poorly designed mill, cheaply manufactured. The grinding mechanism is easily clogged but difficult to disassemble for cleaning. The port into the hopper is too small and must be frequently unblocked. The hopper consistently develops excess static, causing large amounts of coffee to stick; it is badly positioned and fits loosely, guaranteeing a mess to clean up every time the mill is used. After four months of annoying service, the cheap circuit board attached to the power switch broke loose, finally ending the suffering. A nut chopper would work better.

What a dissappointing experience!!!
I purchased the Melitta Mill in April, it’s now July and the thing is shot. We used it daily to grind 2 tablespoons of coffee, first the switches stuck and then we had to plug and unplug it to run the thing. Sure it was inexpensive, but you should get more than three months out of the purchase. $6+ a month just to grind coffee? Don’t buy this poorly constructed product.

melitta products are inferior
I received this grinder because I had purchased a defective Melitta Grind & Brew coffee maker through Amazon. The coffee maker had electrical problems and I sent it back to the manufacturer as the manual instructed. To make a very long story short—Melitta was not able to replace the coffee maker. They stopped making them. Amazon had my money and I waited over 4 frustrating months for a coffee maker. Amazon would not help me and after many, many phone calls Melitta sent me another coffee maker and the coffee mill to compensate for the Brew and Grind. Grinder malfunctioned periodically and finally died with in 9 months. WARNING–DON’T BUY MELITTA PRODUCTS AND RETURNS FOR DEFECTIVE MERCHANDISE SHOULD BE RETURNED TO AMAZON.

Poor design- not worth it
I thought that this was a great price to pay for a burr grinder. However, a key feature of the grinder malfuctioned and broke within 3 months of purchase. The bin that the ground coffee goes into must be engaged, locked in, to a little tab in the base of the grinder. Within no time at all we had a hard time getting the tab to stay put. Within 3 months we were holding it in place during the entire grinding. We tried cleaning it, but that didn’t work. It is a real shame, because the grinder itself works great.

worked great. But, you get what you pay for. It quit working after a few months. I guess Mr. Coffee still goes with the time honored tradition of planned obsolescense. Now I remember why I won’t buy their products. Buyer BEWARE!

Not Bad…
I am sitting here looking at a Solis Maestro Plus in pieces on my living room floor. It had a bad burr ring in it and I paid 20.00 for the replacement. Trying to put it in due to a bad design, the switch broke… so, no coffee grinder. Now, I liked the Solis, when it worked, but to have the factory fix it would cost almost as much as a new one. So, a new designed burr grinder that I am looking at is 199.00. So, what do I do with my bags of beans in the mean time? I stopped at my trusty Bi-Mart and voila… Mr. coffee burr grinder. Well, price was right.. and for a few months thought I would try. I checked the reviews, did the quick fix to adjust for expresso, and am now enjoying a cup of coffee that is quite good. It is not as great as my more expensive grinder, but laying out that much money every year or two for a new quality grinder that leaves dust all over etc., etc., …. so folks, when you look at the cost.. and that all grinders are not perfect… this is not too bad. My first solis quit after one year. The second one broke in one grind place after 6 months… so, complain as you will, quality does not always mean longevity. Or, should I say price. Really, I plan on using this one until I can afford a better one. And, keeping it as backup as quite frankly, the pricier/quality ones break as well. This grinder is quite stable and well designed for its small price. So don’t look a gift horse in the mouth… enjoy! And….. there is no comparison in a cup of coffee ground by a blade grinder (keep for grinding nuts), with one ground by a burr grinder. The burr is the best way to go. If you care for anything besides pre-ground or instant.

Dangerous machine. Knife spins with cap off.
The Braun KSM2 Coffee Grinder is a very dangerous appliance. My wife just got her fingers chopped up while removing the lid, after grinding some coffee beans. She is in the hospital as I type this. I hope it is only stitches. The problem is that the rotating blades still strongly spin after the top cap is removed. Very, very dangerous and it should be taken off the market.

Works Perfectly
It’s very fast. Very sturdy. Does a fantastic job. Makes my coffee taste delicious!

I keep mine in the cabinet beside the coffee because I hate stuff on the counter. With the shorter cord and convenient area to wrap the cord, it’s so simple just to put it in the cabinet next to the filters.

I have not one gripe about this nifty little grinder. I can’t imagine how it could or should be better.

I am a contractor and when I recently remodeled Doug and Susans basement I was eventually shown how to use the grinder to make espresso while on breaks. Unfortunately, I started taking lots of breaks… good espresso! The grinder is quiet, precise,and efficient, like an excellent sub contractor, or a good table saw! The grinder was great. I use a burr grinder at my house but you can’t even talk over the thing. This one whirs below a conversation level, then stores the suberbly consistant ground coffee. I then pull the lever a couple times to dispense premeasured amounts into the doser that is resting in its holder on the machine, and there it is break is on!! Thanks for the good times and good espresso. On my way to hawk some of my tools to buy one of these things, it’s worth it!

good value, better coffee, and do not find it to be messy
I switched to the Capresso from a Braun grinder from the dawn of time. My Braun was very messy and did not grind the beans evenly. The Capresso is a big improvement. The beans are ground evenly. The grounds come out sort of fluffy because a lot of air circulates inside. I don’t think it is messy at all. But I also don’t fill it to the top. I put in about 1/2 cup of beans per pot of coffee, and it fills the Capresso about 1/2 to 2/3 of the way up. So when I take off the lid, all the grounds are down inside the chamber. With my Braun, I had to fill it to the top to get the right amount of ground coffee, and then it was messy when I took off the lid. I roast my own coffee, and I like that there is a little static in the lid. The chaff from the beans rises to the top and sticks there, but the coffee grounds do not. Best of all, the Capresso really improved the taste of my coffee. I had been grinding these beans that I was hating, but using them up because I bought a pound of them. After switching to the Capresso grinder in the middle of the bag, the coffee actually came out good. So it wasn’t the beans so much as my old grinder. I didn’t expect such an improvement, and for only $20. I was worried I was going to have to buy an expensive burr grinder to get good coffee. I’m glad I tried this first.

Love it
I bought this grinder and just love it. I don’t seem to have any of the problems others are having…it isn’t messy and my coffee has not stuck to the bottom at all. I love that it is larger, as we like our coffee strong, and with this one, we can grind a larger amount. Someone mentioned it takes up to 30 seconds to grind your coffee….well coffee should be ground for 20-30 seconds anyway for a perfect flavor…I grind it for about 25 seconds in this grinder and it comes out perfect!

Messy, messy, messy
I grind beans for my coffee every morning. I was using a Krups grinder and decided to switch to this quieter grinder…sold the old grinder in a garage sale. I do regret buying this grinder. It is loud and takes 30 seconds to grind instead of 10. My main complaint is that it is messy. The grounds stick to the sides and bottom and I have to smack it several times to get all the coffee out. I am tempted to purchase another Krups before I break this one by beating the grounds out of it. Also, coffee grounds are EVERYWHERE, I always have to use a cloth to clean up. Not a good buy.

Very messy and sticks to inside
I bought this grinder after using a Braun for several years. Its not much quieter (if at all) and is so messy I’m buying another from Amazon today. I spend much more time getting the grounds out than I do on grinding the coffee. Don’t believe the hype.

Outstanding Coffee Grinder
I bought the chrome version of this machine about a month ago and my experiences with it are excellent. The machine stays cool, grinds about 1/2 pound of coffee beans at a time, and the results are consistently good. It is a neat device, with the cord wrapping around the machine for easy storage. Cleaning requires a small brush so that grinds do not stay at the bottom, and they come right out. I could not be happier with this purchase, but then again, I use it only for what it was made to do, grind beans!

Premium Price Produces Poor Performance
What a failed design. I never thought grinding my own coffee could bring so much despair and frustration, but truly it has. One must stand watch over this grinder as if it were a stubborn, disobedient child.

Imagine this: You’ve turned the timer knob as far as it allows. The grinder whirs loudly as no beans are ground. At first, you shake the grinder to coax beans into the burrs, but it doesn’t help. Next, you manually shove beans down in the hopper with a small spatula. Coffee dust quickly spreads across your counter, creating a mess. Suddenly, the timer stops. You find you’re left enough grinds for three-to-four scoops. You feel defeated, but you soldier on. Repeat this procedure three times until you have enough grinds for a full pot of coffee. Now wait, you’re almost done! Finish your task by vacuuming the counter, grinder and floor below you with a DustBuster.

Without one iota of exaggeration, and I swear by the God who guides me, this is the most aggravating kitchen appliance I have ever owned. And I paid upwards of $100 for it!

Bottom line: If you love coffee and wish to protect your sanity, look elsewhere for a grinder. This is NOT what you want. As one human trying earnest to help another, I beg of you to heed my warning.

Hasn’t worked well since it came out of the box
My husband bought this for me about 4 years ago – and every time we have used it, regardless of the size or roast of the beans – it needs to be fiddled with and jiggled and have a spoon pushed down into the hopper in order for the beans to feed without jamming.

This takes anywhere from 3-5 minutes to get enough for a pot.

I called Solis immediately afterwards, thinking our unit was defective, and was told that it was a problem that they were aware of, and if I shipped the unit back to them they would fix it. Postage and insurance paid by ME. Not to mention the 3-5 week turnaround time that I would be without a coffee grinder.

Poor customer service, poorly designed product – I’ll never buy a Solis again.

ETA: When it *does* grind beans it produces a nice grind for both espresso and drip coffee makers.

FATAL design problem
THE GOOD: I have used the Solis Maestro daily for over a year. I’ve gained some serious experience with it. It’s a nice, slick machine that produces a good, even, fine grind for espresso (about all we ever grind around here). It runs quietly and doesn’t have static electricity problems. The lower hopper fits well so it seals tightly. And it has a self-timer – which is useless. Why useless?

THE BAD: This thing has INEXCUSABLE feed problems. Beans will slide smoothly into the grinding “burrs” for only a few seconds without assistance. It’s bad enough that my wife gets frustrated and abusive with the machine, so I have assumed the bean-grinding responsibility.

I have found NO beans that will simply feed into the burrs without constant help: rocking, banging, poking with spoon or chopstick, etc. I’ve heard that “oily beans” or “large beans” may have a problem: but in a year I have found NO beans, none – not oily, not dry, not big, not small – that feed without constant attention.

Rocking or banging the machine keeps the beans moving, but knocks the burrs together when on the finest settings – this causes burr damage! I’ve found that a bamboo chopstick is the best feed-assist tool; if it is nicked by the rotating burr, it causes no damage. Best approach is a gentle poking and sweeping motion through a half-filled hopper.

THE UGLY TRUTH: you must figure that EACH time you use the machine, you will give it FULL-time attention, feeding the beans down the hopper.

ENGINEERING: As a mechanical engineer, I think the problem should (and could) be addressed by the manufacturer. I believe they had to have discovered this in development and pre-release testing, but released it anyway. I think this is reprehensible.

The machine runs smoothly and quietly and doesn’t vibrate like cheaper grinders; but probably this smoothness exacerbates the problem. Perhaps a bump, or bumps, on top of the rotating burr would “cam” the descending beans with each rotation, and keep them disturbed and moving. Or perhaps a central polyethylene or Teflon plug above the rotating central burr would occupy that space and keep beans from interlocking and packing there, and “bridging” the burr-set. Perhaps some combination, with a rotating central Teflon plug which is cammed toward the top, and relieved toward the bottom… anyway, I’ve intended to try some experiments, but haven’t yet. Has anyone else?

The Fix it Again Tony of espresso grinders
This is machine is recomended for someone who likes high maintenace products. The recomended procedure by the Solis repair people is to clean it a couple of times a week, if you use it for espresso. The machine has plenty of setting but it you go past the middle setting between espresso and drip grind it will jam if you use oily beans, like most espresso rosts. It does give you a sense of what a good grinder will do and encourage one to make enough money to get one. The grinding straight into the filter holder is a great feature, two bad it is so high maintenance. And once you take it apart it is little tricky to get everything aligned right to get it back together , can take several tries. If you are getting it to grind coffee for espresso, think twice before you get this machine, and only buy it if you can’t afford something better like a Rocky.

The grinder is all I expected it to be and more. It’s very quiet, consistant in the grind quality, and doesn’t throw coffee all over like my previous grinder. In fact, it doesn’t leak at all and there is little, if any static electricity.

Excellent Machine
Bought this to use with my rancilio. It seems to have made a huge difference. I thought there was something wrong with the espresso maker as my espresso was always flat and thin tasting. Freshly ground beans is the way to go – vast improvement over preground espresso (illy’s or lavazza). I would have given it 4.5 stars, the only thing holdng it back is the silly doser. Either I’m not using it right, or its just not well designed, But everything else makes this a worthwhile purchase to those coffee freaks who can afford it. Works for me!
Its amazingly quiet considering whats happening to those poor little beans…It gives me just the grade of grind I need for my espresso machine to get a perfect shot…but it gets a 4 rather than 5 because there were no anti-skid pads on the base (I think they may have been missing…or maybe they just don’t provide them even though there is a place for them…

Makes a huge difference, some features confusingly lacking.
I got this to accompany my Gaggia 35005 Carezza, because had been having inconsistent results with blade grinders, and store bought pre-ground wasn’t doing it for me. This thing makes a *huge* difference, it’s incredible. For that particular espresso machine, I found that a grind setting of 9 works great.

The problems are the doser doesn’t actually neatly dose anything, sometimes I have to hit it 5 times, sometimes 3… puzzling. You can eye it, but the thing only appears to work if you grind a bunch of beans, and make more than one drink. First drink, it takes a few pulls to get the grounds to the front for the doser. Also, there’s no neat way to only grind what you need to use, looks like some experimentation and another timer will be required.

Another issue is it looks like you have to actually disassemble it, which is not a simple task, to clean it thoroughly… or really even at all.

Overall, it’s quiet, creates perfect grounds, has a *ton* of settings (although, I can only see myself using two, one for coffee, one for espresso), but the doser is garbage. I might have opted for a cheaper model, knowing this… but my lattes are perfect now.

Gaggia 8002 MDF Burr Grinder
I always wanted to be able to grind my coffee for espresso to fit my machine. There are many things that influence process of making espresso wright. With in store grinding I ended up with too fine or too coarse coffee and consequently with bad results. I finally don’t need to worry. This Gaggia grinder is perfect match and absolutely comparable to pro grinders. Noise level is lower than I expected and functionality is excellent.

There is no substitute for making your espresso by yourself from beans to cup. No automatic machines, doesn’t matter how good, can give your that pleasure. Now I have it.

When my automtic espresso machine went I decided to purchase a more labor-intensive machine where the parts could be replaced. That meant grinding up beans fresh. So, I decided on the Gaggia 8002 MDF Burr Grinder. The grinder is definitely pricey, but it’s only about $60 more expensive than the Starbucks grinders, which I had previously and lasted only a year or so. The Gaggia grinder has a wide variety of settings, which allow you to easily grind beans for a standard coffee machine or for espresso. I recently purchased another grinder to hold just decaf beans. The only reasons that I did not give the product 5 stars were (1) price and (2) not easy to clean. If you can get by the price and settle with the fact that a grinder will always have coffee bean remnants, than this is the grinder for you.

Best grinder for the money
I couldn’t recommend this grinder more highly. It is solidly constructed, and the manufacturer took the time to add all the little details that are missing on cheaper models, like no-slip feet and a retractable cord (which is a little short, perhaps the one negative to this otherwise perfect product). The stainless steel grinder bowl is well designed – it has gradiated markings to let you know how many beans to put in for the number of cups of coffee you intend to brew, and it perfectly grinds the beans to your desired coarsness. In addition, it is removable AND dishwasher safe, making for easy cleaning.

The machine’s slim, tall profile is ideal for easy on-counter or cabinet storage, and the black / stainless steel finish is attractive and a good match to most major coffee maker and espresso machine brands. The grinder provides multiple different settings for different coarsness and the amount of beans you are grinding, and since the grinding time is pre-set you can just push the button and move on to doing something else while the coffee grinds. It may take the “art” out of coffee grinding, but it will give you a great cup of coffee every time.

A final note – you may feel constrained by the pre-set options, but they still provide quite a bit of flexibility. If you like your coffee weaker, just put in a few less beans than your desired cup mark would call for (or vice versa if you like your coffee stronger). Having the specific settings means that when your experimenation finally comes out the way you want it to, you’ll be able to remember next time (“oh, I used the 4-cup measure of beans to 8 cups of water, and I ground it on the medium-coarse setting”) rather than having to try to guess at what you did to get that “perfect cup.”

I can’t imagine anything else that I would want in a grinder – the only semi-common option that it is missing is extra storage for beans or ground coffee; these features are not missed, however, as I always grind my beans fresh and I store them in a cool, dry airtight container. Storing your beans or grounds in the grinder is a sure way to ruin their taste.

Is this the perfect grinder? I’d say so. I give it a perfect 5/5.

Quick n’ Easy!
I bought this unit mainly for grinding dry spices. I used to grind them with a mortar and pestle which usually takes about 10-15 minutes with pain and agony, and that didn’t even do the job. With this grinder, I load the spices in…boom, boom and boom – literally 3 pushes, I got beautiful spices ground to fine powder in about 7 SECONDS! The amazing thing about this grinder is that it doesn’t use sharp blades, it’s more like a propeller and I like it because it’s safe contact with my fingers when being cleaned.

This is an incredible grinder at an unbeatable low price, I might as well buy another one to grind coffee beans (perhaps in black), I bought this model in white.

Pros:

Krups Coffee Grinder _ Great for home use
I really love this grinder. It is the first I owned, but I have used a friends and the commercial one when I worked at a national coffee chain. It grinds evenly and has good power, but it doesn’t get as fine as if it is done with the commercial machine. I rinse the lid after each use and wipe out the machine with a cloth so I can also use it to grind spices and nuts. I gave it a 4 because I wish I could remove the blade for better cleaning. I worry after years of mostly coffee grinding use, my spices and nuts will begin having a slight coffee taste.

Not bad, but not as good as my last Krups
I’ve been using Krups coffee grinders for years. My last one was made in Germany, and worked flawlessly until a relative used it to grid 5 lbs of nuts without cleaning it.

This new one has an oval shape, which sucks as the coffee now gets stuck in the two pointy ends. The motor (or gears) makes a very unpleasing sound which initially had me thinking this was either a DOA or soon to fail. Had it for three months not, it still works, still sound awful. The edge of the clear cover collects coffee dust on it, and is a pain to clean.

It does the job, so four stars. But I would not buy this one again, and will be wary of Krups wares.

Krups 203-42 Fast Touch Coffee Grinder
This is the second Krups coffee grinder

that I’ve owned.

The first Krups was used every day

for about fifteen years.

The only minus I can think of is that there is a cavity

below the metal receptacle that, through

the crack between it and the plastic housing,

becomes over time, filled with old, stale

coffee residue. I noticed this when I took

the old one apart.

Other than that, it’s great. The new one grinds

much faster than the old one.

Abysmal!
This was absolutely awful. We bought this for light use in an office, the thing worked great for about a week. After that nothing but problems. We had to constantly clean it, the blades refused to grind the coffee and had to basically disassemble it everytime we wanted to ground coffee every morning and afternoon. We got great at using thin knives to clean out the mechanism. Please don’t waste your money on this. Steer as far clear from this as you can.

Not Good for Espresso.
If you’re thinking about grinding coffee for an espresso machine with this grinder: forget it! The finest (“espresso”) grind is coarse enough for drip coffee! I even disassembled the thing to see if I can manually adjust it, but no such luck. By the way, I also noticed the componenets are cheaply made while I had the machine open. I am giving it one star because I can’t give it less, and also because it looks cool, but it will ook even better in my garbage can tonight

Some Flaws, Some Virtues
I have been using this grinder for several months and I basically like it: it’s a dependable, usable machine. It has some flaws. The coarsest setting, as several reviewers note, is suitable for a fine drip grind, not for cafetiere-type presses — unless you like your coffee pretty muddy. The plastic receptacle does develop some static cling, which I don’t mind; you can just brush it out. The idea of storing beans in the top and then dialing a number to get a certain amount of ground coffee is to me silly (the top is so small that you have to transfer beans from some other jar to the top every day anyway, practically). But the dial feature allows for hands-off grinding. This is the descendant of some very sturdy Delonghi machines, which are similar to older (and nearly indestructible) Waring grinders of the past. Nothing’s as good as it was in the past, it seems, but this grinder is suitable for 21st-century use.

My morning coffee is great!
I have now been using my DeLonghi DCG59 Retro Burr Grinder for two weeks. My morning coffee is as good or better than anything I have gotten at Starbucks, Joe Muggs or Caribou. I grind my beans fresh just before I make my mocha. I love it. It is a simple machine and it performs amazingly. I hope that it will last as long or longer than my DeLonghi expresso machine. If you want the freshest coffee available; regardless of how you make your coffee, I highly recommend this machine.

Best coffee grounds!
I consider myself to be a connoisseur of all things coffee, or at least just someone who cannot live without it. This unit is exactly what I needed. It allows you the control to find the perfect grind and has an automatic timer to ensure this. The reservoir is plenty large and store enough beans for a few brews. I’m impressed with the quality of its build, as it is both stylish and very sturdy.

Mine has worked well for 2 years
I have been very pleased with this coffee grinder. I grind oily dark French Roast coffee exclusively and I am quite pleased with the consistency of the fine grind that this machine produces. the only problem I have had is that it clogs from time to time, not dropping beans from the hopper into the grinding portion of the device. Because the volume of ground coffee is time dependent, when this happens the measure of coffee isn’t accurate. The problem occurs because the oily nature of the coffee produces some slight stickiness that keeps the beans from flowing through. Cleaning the throat of the machine fixes the problem. It grinds more quickly than my previous burr grinder, a long-discontinued Salton that lasted for 20 years. The Cuisinart is still going strong after 2 years but I don’t expect that it will last for 20. I hope that I haven’t put a jinx on it by writing this review.

Better than a blade grinder, but not built to last.
Our unit lasted a little less than a year with daily use. Before breaking (more on that later) it performed only… okay. Certainly better than the whirly-blade grinders, but don’t think that you’ll get the equivalent performance of a $200 machine. Grounds are less uniform and the poster that mentioned the fine powder, no matter the setting, is absolutely right.

Build quality is certainly not top-notch, which is expected at this price point. Build quality is to blame for the failure of our unit – there is a column at the bottom of the bean reservoir and the top plate of the grinding mechanism is attached to the bottom of that column. Beans flow from the reservoir, through the column and in to the grinder. While the top grinding plate is metal, the column that it is attached to is plastic – this is the part that broke on my unit, rendering the unit completely useless.

Buy this unit if you don’t want to spring for something four times as expensive, but be aware that it’ll have less than 1/4 of the life-span of the more expensive unit and it’ll be outperformed by a noticeable margin.

Fine functionality, terrible quality.
I am on my second Cusinart DBM-8. The first one lasted a little over a year, then just stopped working. The cost of fixing it was more than the cost of a new one, so I purchased another. This morning, when I got up to make some coffee, I find that this new one is now not working. I have had it for about 9 months. So, two DBM-8′s, average life, 11 months.

It used to be that appliances lasted forever, that is no longer the case. Cuisinart also used to be a name associated with high quality products, that is also no longer true. I would recommend NOT purchasing this product.

Better than a hammer?
Regardless of the setting you use, you will get half coffee powder and half coarse grounds. In addition, the feature that is intended to allow you to control the amount of grounds you make with a switch on the top … does not work. Be prepared to grind more than you need, and then measure the grounds (somehow avoiding the powder) yourself.

It’s not even terrible
In my case I can’t even say it’s noisy because the grinder didn’t work at all! Manufacturing defect deprived me the chance to listen how it works.

Burr grinder is a mess
the grinder does a pretty good job of grinding the bean. The grind is consistent from time to time and I am satisfied with that feature. The biggest problem is the mess that is generated from grinding. Maybe you should expect a mess when you grind coffee I don’t know. I will try another brand when this one wears out.

Great unit for the price! New found flavor in coffee.
If you expect this unit to work as well as a $200 burr grinder, don’t waste your money. However, If you are currently using a blade type coffee grinder and would like to dramatically improve the flavor of your home ground coffee beans, then this unit might be a good chose for you. I didn’t want to spend the $100 plus for a grinder. Frankly, I wasn’t convinced that a blade grinder versus a burr grinder would make a difference in the way the end coffee would taste. When my blade grinder finally died, I decided I wanted to test this theory that a burr grinder produced a better tasting cup of coffee with the same beans I was using in my blade grinder. You will read from many sources on the web that the blade grinders will over heat the beans during the grind, and this is the reason you get an off or bitter flavor. Well, I would feel the ground beans right after blade grinding and I could feel any heat buildup. They weren’t even warm. So how could this cause any off flavor?

Well, I ordered the La Pavoni PA-BURR grinder. As soon as I got it I had to try it out. I placed the grind adjustment about in the middle of the range. I put in the quantity of beans that I needed. Next, I set the grind timer for the number of cups worth of bean I wanted ground and started the grinder. All went well. After making coffee with the same beans I used in my old blade grinder, I was totally shocked that I could truly tell a difference in the flavor! Not just a minor flavor change, but a WOW type of improvement. I’m hooked! A burr grinder does make a flavor improvement, though I don’t buy the theory that it is due to the blade type grinder over heating the beans. I think it has to due more with some of the bean being pulverized so fine that this causes the off flavor, though I really don’t know why.

I have to tell you that I did have one disaster with the La Pavoni PA. After my first use I decided to clean the burr grinder out with a brush. I found the burr grinder comes apart by turning the top burr a few degrees, which unlocks it allowing it to be lifted out. I found it easy to brush out and pretty uneventful, until my next grind! Somehow I didn’t get the burr locked back in place. This caused the grinder to lift the burr out and the beans grind was a mix of all sizes from unground beans to power, not to mention the mess everywhere. So, if you use this grinder and remove the burr at some point, make sure you turn it fully and tightly back in the lock position.

Pros: Very good grind and consistent grind size. Very little dust. The price for what you get. Very easy to use. Noise level is acceptable. The unit looks good. Much better tasting coffee compared to a blade grinder.

Cons: The cup to grind timer doesn’t match with its markings. Makes a mess if you don’t get the burr grinder seated and locked. There is a little bit of grinding dust that can get on my kitchen counter. Not really anymore then my old blade grinder.

Conclusion, I am really enjoying this new grinder. If it were to fail in the future, I might be willing to purchase a higher dollar burr grinder now that I know that it does make a difference in flavor. I have had this unit for a month now and really like it. It truly hit the price value point for me.

great little grinder
I did a lot of research before purchasing a grinder and I’m glad I took the time to narrow it down to this one. It has done a great job at a consistant grind, with minimal noise, and tons of grind settings. Quality.

Quiet and smooth
I bought this to replace my very noisy and not-very-consistent blade grinder. So far it’s been quiet and gives great and consistent grinding. My favorite feature is the smooth wheel for choosing amounts to grind. I like the fact I can choose 3.83 cups’ worth of grinds, rather than three or four. I hope this burr grinder will last a long time! The only thing I would change is the plastic grinds container. A glass container would not be so static-y. Other than that, I’m very pleased with my choice.

Good little grinder
Years ago used a standard spinning blade grinder for my coffee. Though it was better than pre-ground, eventually decided the gain was minor and it was not worth the hassle. Have not wanted to spend $200 for the top-line burr grinders, but saw some good reviews of the La Pavoni. I’ve had it for about a month now; my wife and I are very pleased. Some reviews I’ve seen talk about it spattering coffee ground dust in the area – have had no problems like that. The coffee is noticeably better and fresher tasting and the grinder is very convenient to use. Don’t have to stand there and hold the lid down and try to guess when it has been ground to the right consistency. Just set the number of cups you want ground, put the beans in the hopper, turn it on and walk away. And the burr grinding does seem to improve flavor more than the old blade grinder did (and even more of an improvement compared to pre-ground.

Durability Problems
I bought a Hearthware iRoast Home Coffee Roaster from Sweet Maria’s two years ago. I’ve been pleased by its performance but not by its durability. After the one year warranty expired, I had to replace the thermoflector because the metal cone separated itself from the cylindrical post (poor design). Several months later I had to replace the entire roasting pot when the glass cracked (Hearthware Home Products will not replace the glass chamber separately). Neither problem was my fault. I followed the instructions. I didn’t drop anything. I didn’t put the hot pot in cold water. The thermoflector failed and the roasting pot cracked in normal roasting conditions. Hearthware refused to make any exceptions to its warranty policy. Charges for replacement parts and shipping have therefore significantly increased the initial purchase price of the iRoast machine. It’s not a bargain after all.

GREAT coffee roaster
We had one of the orginal Hearthware roasters and wore it out after 3 years of weekly roasting. we looked at several other brands and went back to the newest hearthware, and very glad we did. the programed options are outstanding, its easy to use and makes great coffee, very consistant roasts a friend has another brand and can not get consistant results.

GOOD VALUE
I purchased the I-Roast 2, after having decent luck with I-Roast 1. Hearthware seems to have corrected some of the very minor flaws with version 1 and I am extremely happy with it. The major thing that has been corrected is the tendency of the sealed top to unseal itself, which was a mess. I have not had this happen with version 2.

With some green beans, you have to roast smaller batches (Ethopian comes to mind) or it will overheat and shut down. However, it will do almost any controlled roast you could ever want. Version 2 seems much improved in roasting the entire batch more evenly, something that was not necessarily the case with version 1. Version 2 also seems to take more slough out of the roasting chamber.

Do be forewarned that this unit is VERY noisy (as most home roasters are, with the exception of the FreshRoast), so your neighbors may hate you if you live in an apartment.

This is a great unit for the home roaster.

Programmed to Perfection
The ability to pre-program ten different multi stages and a few other improvements made this unit a quantum leap above the original…which was already good. I found that on my unit the programmed temperatures and the temperature being shown by the unit at different stages varied somewhat, but judging by the results that didn’t matter much. I have programs entered for all the coffee types that I enjoy and even have multi programs for my favorites (Yemen Mocha Matari and Yemen Mocha Sanani), and enjoy blending medium dark roasts with dark roasts of the same type bean for a unique flavor. The ability to control the roast to the last detail, saving at least half the cost of the same type of coffee purchased pre roasted, makes coffee roasting and using this unit in particular, great.

My Third Alpenrost
Let me start by saying I like the Alp and use if for most of my roasts. I still use a Fresh Roast+ for smaller batches or if I need to be extra careful with tracking a particular roast color, etc.

My first Alp stopped working after two roasts. My second Alp stopped working during the first roast. My third Alp seems to be working fine. Swissmar was very quick to send replacements (sending the new one even before they had picked up the defective machine). They paid for all postage. UPS picked up the old ones at my front door.

The biggest advantage to the Alp is the roast size. If you’re tired of multiple back to back roasts with smaller roasters, the Alp is for you. I drink enough drip coffee and espresso to still justify 3 or 4 back to back roasts with the Alp and am pleased with the 8oz roast size.

Pros: roast size, looks of machine, noise level, ease of directing smoke

Cons: difficult to roast by sight, harder to clean than smaller roasters, very long roasts – 20 minutes and still not to the second crack (some double roasts needed, more on this later), more than a few folks have needed replacements prior to getting one that worked well.

Most of the “Cons” are easily overcome. This machine forces you to roast by crack sounds, time, smoke, smell, or roasting profiles learned from earlier roasts. Once you get the hang of it, it’s fairly easy to get a good roast with just about any bean.

I’ve learned each machine is different. My particular machine took a very long time to get to the second crack with some kinds of beans. So long in fact, that I needed to “double roast” before I fixed the problem. It would take 12 minutes into the second roast to hit the second crack. (kind of negates the time savings of the larger roast size) I read about a fix, implemented it, and sped up the roast profile. An allen wrench can adjust the temp setting via a circuit card accessible from the bottom of the machine. You can easily change the roast temp setting in just a few minutes. Now I always get to the second crack during the first roast. Problem solved.

I use 6 inch aluminum exhaust duct to route the Alp smoke out a cardboard cutout I place in the kitchen window. The aluminum can be “molded” around the exhaust vent of the Alp for a fairly tight seal. My wife no longer complains about the smoke as she does when I use the FR+. (I let the FR+ vent to the kitchen exhaust fan over the stove – the kind that exhausts to the outside.)

All in all I’m glad I got the Alp. I use it religously and team it with my Rancilio Rocky grinder, Rancilio Miss Sylvia espresso machine, and Capresso Team Luxe drip machine.

Bottom line: I highly recommend this machine. I had some roasting experience with the FR+ and I believe this helped me to get consistantly good roasts with the Alp. There may be a slight learning curve for someone starting out with the Alp as their first roaster.

A very nice machine with a few flaws
I believe that this is the only drum-style home roaster on the market. It has an elegant design, and the primary advantage is that it will roast 8 ounces at a time, which is more than two and a half times more than the available fluid-bed (hot air) machines. For my tastes, this supplies me with 9-cups for five days. The operation is simple, but the clean-up is slightly harder than for the hot-air machine.

Customer service from the Swissmar distributor has been excellent, showing a responsiveness seldom found today. To date, they have replaced the machine twice, paying all shipping charges. This brings us to the problems. While the roasting time (not including the cooling cycle) has ranged from 15-18 minutes, the beans can easily go from a medium-dark roast to completely burned within a 30-second period at the end of the roasting period. The machine has roast selections ranging from 1 to 15,with 1 corresponding to 16 1/2 minutes and each higher number increases the time by an additional 15 seconds. The mid-range setting (8) is labeled as medium and it is often recommended on their packages of beans. However, all three machines that I have tried will burn the beans to a black, smokey, crisp at that setting, leaving a burned oily residue over the entire inside of the machine. Experience finally taught me that the operation is highly sensitive to ambient temperature. At normal indoor household temperatures, I must manually trigger the cooling cycle at 15-16 minutes if I do not to burn the beans beyond recognition. This is less than the time for the lowest setting (1). Outside at (62-67) degrees, it may take up to 18 minutes (setting #7) for beans from the same bag. I exchanged the first machine because I concluded that it must have had a bad timer or heat control. When the second one worked the same way, I decided to live with it, watching carefully and manually timing the roasts with a stopwatch. The second machine began to develop cracks on the front of the plastic cover and the plastic hinges on the rear eventually broke off. Now, I am being especially careful with the third machine to avoid leaning the cover back against the build-in hinge stops without something else to prop it up.

The quality and consistency of the roast appears to be inferior to my fluid-bed roaster (Hearthware), which reliably brings every bean in a batch to exactly the same degree of roast. Batches from the Alpenrost will typically have beans ranging over a fairly wide range of color, sometimes even dumping a green bean. This isn’t necessarily bad, as there is some merit to having the mix of flavors from come from the different degrees of roast.

Despite the annoyances of not being able to view the roast (without opening the machine which cools the beans and exhausts acrid smoke into the room) and having to guess at the roasting times, I am using the Alpenrost 90% of the time, mostly because of the larger batch size.

Be aware that the roaster will blow out a significant amount of smoke, especially at the end of the heating cycle, which is characteristic of all consumer roasters. If you are indoors, you must have a way of directing the outflow to a powered outside vent. The Alpenrost’s outflow nozzle works especially well with the Jenn-Aire exhaust.

If you don’t mind having to fuss a little bit and enjoy monitoring the roasing process, then get this nifty coffee roaster.

Fresh home roasted…..YUM!!! And Lots of fun!!
I purchased this for my husband for Christmas this year (2005). He is having alot of fun with it!! He had been roasting in an air popper before, and it was pretty good, but this is even better and we don’t run the risk of melting the air popper anymore. He has shared his home roast with all our neighbors, he has tried many different types of coffee beans, from Mexican to Pure Kona…..

I would highly recommend this roaster!!! We have had alot of great coffee!!

Best roaster I’ve used
I have been roasting my own coffee for six or seven years. I have used many different roasters (heartware something, alpenroast, many others i can’t well remember and most recently a freshroast ). My wife (dosen’t drink coffee) has always complained about the smell of roasting and brewing coffee. She says it smells like burnt seeds. The iroast is the first time she has said it smells like coffee(even tasted some). By puttting in my own times and temps I was able to roast coffee that was as good as when I used to use a cast iron pot and spoon over open flame, only much easier now. Not only is the coffee better tasting than the others buy cleaning the unit is quicker and easier. I’m impressed and would highly recommend the iroast to anyone who roasts or wants to roast coffee.

Roasts well but its loud and smokey
I purchased an I-Roast about two months ago as a replacement for a Freshroast Plus which had died. At first impression, the I-Roast appears quite a bit more refined than the FreshRoast. More importantly, the I-Roast has about twice the roasting capacity. On the negative side, the I-Roast is considerably louder and creates more smoke. For indoor roasting, attaching a duct for the smoke is a must. What I like most about the I-Roast is the tweakability of the roast condiditions. Too much heat too fast can lead to the inside of the beans being underroasted. The ability of the I-Roast to adjust the roast temperature should prevent that.

Nothing Beats Fresh Roasted Coffee!!!!
I’m having a wonderful time with the i-roast 2. The day it arrived I was up and roasting in less than an 30 minutes and experimenting with my own settings the next day. I always thought buying whole roasted beans was the best way to insure a fresh coffee experience, but roasting your own beans takes freshness to a higher level! I appreciate the ease of use and the positive experience I am having with the i-roast 2.

A Love/Hate Relationship
I have had my I-Roast for almost a year now. After reading so many rave reviews about this product, I have to wonder if I got a defective one. I’ve used it at least a hundred times; up to 5 times a week whenever I have green beans. Before I had the I-Roast, I roasted beans by stirring them in a big cast-iron skillet. That process took at least 20 minutes, 30 if I wanted coffee that was roasted evenly. I could roast over 1/2 pound at a time in the skillet. The I-Roast takes just a bit longer than 8 minutes, start to finish, to roast my beans to medium-dark. I have to rotate the thing manually the whole time, to ensure even roasting, but it’s better than stirring for half an hour! The amount of coffee beans it roasts is (irritatingly) about 1.5 days worth, so I have to roast two days in a row, then I get a day off. Obviously, since I do still use the thing, I like it better than the skillet.

First of all, I must make a quick note about the instruction booklet. Really, all they would have had to write is “Quick Start Guide – press a “preset” button, then press the “roast” button.” The instructions don’t actually state those steps. Instead, they explain all the parts and features of the machine, then leave you to figure out how to start it. It took me so long to fool with the buttons, and refer back to the booklet the first few times I roasted, that SOMETHING went wrong and the machine didn’t actually start the roasting until the countdown timer had hit about 3:00. I still have that non-starter problem if I leave the roaster plugged in, too. The heat element stays on all the time (also bad for that electricity bill), so we make sure to unplug it when we’re done. If the thing is plugged in for more than about 10 seconds before I push the “roast” button, it doesn’t start roasting until a random number of minutes have ticked off the countdown. It just sits, counting down silently, while I tear my hair out, hoping my beans have enough time to get roasted when it finally does decide to start. At the beginning, I ended up finishing a few batches in the skillet. Unplugging the machine for any reason during the cycle doesn’t seem to help either – it just confuses the I-Roast even more.

We noticed right from the start that during the (hotter) second and third cycles, the beans don’t move very much. This problem produces charred black beans at the bottom of the pot, yellow beans at the top, and a kitchen full of smoke. The troubleshooting guide in the instruction booklet said that if the beans don’t circulate enough, you should use fewer beans. I have tried to roast JUST the amount for one day’s worth of coffee (since I’m “not allowed” to run it more than 7 times a week, that’d be the smallest amount I could get away with) with the same result. I found out that if I constantly tilted the roaster to different angles, to shift the beans, I could get a nice even roast in just a few minutes. The “Preset 1″ setting wants the beans to roast for 13 minutes (including “cool” cycle). I choose “Preset 1,” gently tilt the machine in a circular motion through the entire cycle (the first and cool cycles don’t really move the beans much either), and I’ve never had it down below 4:00 before pressing “Cool” and waiting the 4 minutes more.

Some internal part of my I-Roast burned out just the other day. At the time, the roaster shut off, and I smelled that nasty buring-electronics smell. Luckily, it seems that the part that fried wasn’t that important – the roaster still works. As a bonus, because of damage to the sensors, I can now take the pot off during the cool cycle without the roaster freaking out and playing its old tricks. Now I don’t have to be so precise about how dark the beans are when I press cool… I can just take the pot off when they’re perfect. Hooray for malfunctions! I do like to use the cool cycle as long as I need to, though… it finishes the beans more uniformly.

I do have a few more things I wanted to comment about. Most importantly – don’t lift the pot by the handle while it’s attached to the heater base. It’s too much weight for the handle to bear. Our handle broke within 3 months (mind you, I was holding it by the handle to rotate the machine while it roasted), and the whole pot fell apart when the handle broke. We tried to epoxy it where the plastic broke (under the handle, at the point of the screw), but the sensors were too smart for that. We had to order a new pot – and they aren’t cheap! Now I just hold the machine by the heater base – it doesn’t get hot – and that seems to work fine (I make sure to keep my hands away from the air intake on the back). The outer plastic on the heater base feels a little flimsily attached, but so far, so good. Also, there are small holes around the edges of the screen-part of the lid. They get filled with glop, and cleaning them out really helps with air circulation. I think that the lid is poorly designed, in general, although I do like the chaff collecter… it seems like magic! The lid doesn’t let enough air OUT, which is the reason the beans don’t circulate. As a test, I took the chaff collector out and also I didn’t cinch down the lid assembly… it was extremely messy, and it took a bit longer, but the beans were flying around all over the place, and it roasted the coffee without my having to rotate the machine! Finally, the cooling cycle doesn’t really cool the beans. In fact, the heat element doesn’t turn off and they still go on cooking. You need to press “cool” a few shades lighter than your preferred bean-darkness. It DOES say that in the instruction booklet. I just wanted to stress the point. It’s very easy to wind up with black beans.

I can see why drum roasters are so much better, but I HAVE been spoiled by this machine. I wouldn’t want to roast in a skillet again. It took me a lot of fooling around to get it right, but now I do like my little troublemaker, while it lasts.

easy to use, poor roasting, terrible quality
There are two pros to this unit. It is very easy to use, and is very low in price compared to other home roasters. The cons are the roast times are way too long for a quality roast and the quality is terrible. I received this unit as a gift over a year ago but due to moving to a new state I just started using it a month ago. After roasting about 4lbs of beans it stopped working and I haven’t figured out how to repair it yet. I would completely avoid this unit with reliability as poor as this. Another good reason to avoid this unit is their customer service is non existent. [...]

Great to roast your own coffee! This product needs competition though!
The Z&D Roaster is great, but not built to last. The smell of coffee roasting is all you get from this. No smoke as the air is circulated and I believe it is one of the only units of this kind that has a catalyst to keep the smoke smell virtually gone. All you smell is the aroma of fresh roasted coffee – even coffee drinkers love that. I used mine very regularly, but it has been about 18 months and just like the other reviewers. Bam! The fan blade broke in 2. I have replaced the glass cylinder twice at $20 a pop. I didn’t catch the blade break in time and my unit melted slightly to where it is trashed. I would consider this product value to be about $60, quality wise, but since they have little competition out there, they can ask the $149. I am buying another. I have considered the I-Roast 2 but it costs more and I’m not sure about the smoke issue. At least this round, I have a few backup parts from the old one.

Doesn’t last long
I have had my Z & D roaster since Christmas 2004. I had to send it back for warranty work within the first 6 months. They took care of everything, but I was out the roaster for the duration and of course the shipping expense. It just broke again yesterday and it is well out of the warranty period. While it worked, it worked just fine and we were happy, but I’m with the other reviewers. A $150 appliance should last longer than a year and a half.

Chamber cracks
I’ve had the roaster 2 years. Have had to replace the glass chamber 3 times. The last chamber cracked after 2 roastings. Customer service said we don’t cover the chambers, we won’t help you. The coffee roasts alright. Sometimes light, sometimes dark. We never know what we will get. My husband still loves it but I’m going to find a better product.

great while it worked…
I received a Zach and Dani’s coffee roaster as a gift. It worked for about eighteen months and then quit. It started with the timer going out, which required me to unplug the appliance in order to get it to reset. However, after about a month and a half of that (18 mos. after I received the appliance), it just quit working. I phoned Zach and Dani’s when the timer initially broke and asked them if they had any suggestions. However, the only suggestion they offered was “if it’s under a year old, and you have the receipt, you may send it back for repair.” When I explained to them that this was a gift and I therefore wouldn’t have a receipt, as well as the fact that I it was just over a year old, I was told that they wouldn’t be able to help me. When I offered to pay them to service the machine, I was told “no, we only service machines that are under warranty.” If you’re satisfied with a roaster that works well for a year and a half, then go ahead and spend the $149. However,if you’re like me and think that a roaster should last more than a year and a half, don’t waste your money. My mother’s Zach and Dani’s roaster broke in less than a year.
